A high noon showdown with the premierships equal lowest scorers promised not to be a gunfight at the ok carrel, but goals aplenty were to be seen.
Paul Ince had cranked the pressure up by stating that this was now a win or bust game - so where does this leave us now?
DJ promised to ring the changes, however only two were made, Sturridge coming in on an enforced change due to Blake's injury. Whilst Naylor was "rested" and the ambling Luzhny given his first premiership start.
Wolves kicked off and very soon had the first chance on goal. An amazing bit of skill by Camara saw him do a cheeky back heel into the path of Cameron, but his shot was wildly hit, due partly to him not expecting the pass!
Chances were few and far between in a keenly fought yet nervy encounter. Things changed on 21 mins when the premierships "buy of the season 2001" Angel turned in a low cross from Barry just 2 yards out. Barry had found plenty of room to cross with Luznhy woefully out of position and struggling to get his enormous bulk into a tackling position. Villa 1 Wolves 0
Things were made even harder just 3 minutes later when Angel doubled his tally from a similar position, this time with an attack down the Wolves right flank Villa 2 Wolves 0. Again Wolves defensive problems were evident as woeful marking saw the Vile go two up. Wolves tried to get back into the game but were making few chances, as the Vile fans began to wake up, Alex Rae shut them up again with his fourth premiership goal for the season. Some neat work in midfield saw Rae gather the ball and run towards the goal, a lucky defection saw the ball hang sweetly for Rae and his left foot shot from the edge of the area gave their keeper no chance. Villa 2 Wolves 1 and game on. Shortly after Wolves should have had a penalty when a Vile defender handled in the area - but again what ref is gonna award us a penalty?
Half time Villa 2 Wolves 1
The second half started in the worst possible way as a speculative cross, hoof, shot somehow found its way out to Barry who made no mistake as Wolves defenders flapped around him. Villa 3 Wolves 1and wolves looking down. However, as with the game last week at Tottingham, Wolves started playing and had the majority of the ball - it's that killer instinct that we lack. In fact I don't recall Villa having another noteworthy effort on goal as Wolves took control of the game.
A double substitution on the hour saw Miller replace Sturridge and Silas for the ineffective Cameron. However, with virtually all of the play Wolves had to wait until the 80th minute before another goal. This time Miller played an excellent through ball from inside his own half to release Kennedy who raced past a defender to slot the ball past the substitute keeper. Villa 3 Wolves 2 and Wolves looked for the elusive 3rd goal, however it was not to be.
To be honest Villa are a poor team, who will struggle all season. But that's the point Wolves lost to a poor team, a poor team that contrived to score three times and to rub salt into the wounds two of those were scored by the premierships worst imported striker. Wolves were woefully inadequate at the back, mediocre in midfield and inept up front. To play well and lose again is not good enough. No doubt DJ will rue the chances missed or say "we were the better team" - but the fact is we are rooted to the bottom with no chance of advancing before Christmas. Historically every team in bottom place at Christmas has been relegated - well we are in that spot after results went desperately wrong for Wolves.
The future certainly is not old Gold n Black we are staring the nationwide full on in the face and DJ can't or won't do anything about it. It's obvious he has no tactics and with the premierships oldest squad it's apparent that they do not have the legs for it. With no money to spend why not sack DJ and use his overpaid salary to bring in someone that can either shoot straight or defend properly. DJ your blind blinkered view will make us the laughing stock of the division - even more so than Sunderland last year, so just admit defeat you are not good enough and either bring in a "number 2" or leave now.
I hate to be defeatist but we are doomed and it is about damage limitation now.
