Match Report by Bushbury Wolf

When I wrote the match report for the Wolves-Arsenal cup match I predicted a Boxing Day massacre and - score-line aside - this was as white a whitewash as you are likely to see. Make no mistake Wolves were out-classed and even Luzhny - part of this arsenal side last season - looked completely out of his depth. Men against boys as they say.

Wolves have made a habit of giving away early goals and in this mismatch they heroically held out for all of 13 minutes. An Arsenal free kick on the edge of the Wolves area was sent through a gap in the Wolves wall (just avoiding Cameron's bum), forcing a smart save from Oakes. However from the resulting corner Arsenal opened the scoring. Cygan flicked on Henry's corner and Vierra slid it goal-wards - the ball deflected off Craddock and into the net, past Oakes and Rae on the line. Arsenal 1 Wolves 0

One goal down and only 13 minutes gone - you had to fear the worst. seven minutes later and Craddock did his best to fulfil those expectations. With plenty of time to lay the ball back to Oakes, the luck-less centre back dwelt on the ball and got it caught under his feet. Vierra nipped in, took the ball off Craddock, ran into the box and - as Oakes came out, he laid the ball back to Henry to lash the ball into the gaping net. Unbelievably it was Henry's first Premiership goal since the 1st of November. Arsenal 2 Wolves 0

Now the only thought was how many would Arsenal get, would it be more than the 5 in the FA Cup match? Well, despite a torrent of Arsenal pressure, Wolves held out until half-time. Oakes - who had an excellent match - made saves from Bergkamp and Parlour.

Despite the often talked about gulf in class, Wolves did have a couple of chances to pull a goal back. Craddock spurned a chance to make partial amends for his earlier errors when a corner was half-cleared to Camara whose shot went particularly wayward, falling nicely for Craddock but he spooned his shot into the crowd.

Wolves best chance of the game fell to Miller, but there was to be no saviour for wolves on this day. Camara fed Cameron, who laid a defence-splitting pass into the path of Miller, setting the young Scot up with a one-on-one with the Arsenal keeper. Unfortunately Miller seems to have caught Camara-itis - shooting early but close enough to Lehmann to let him save it.

Half time Arsenal 2 Wolves 0

The second half was mostly an exhibition match for Arsenal who strangely didn't seem too interested in improving their goal difference. Maybe they felt sorry for Wolves, or maybe Luzhny had had a word at half time. Whatever the reason, the match didn't really start again until right at the end. After saving bravely from Bergkamp, Oakes was finally beaten again by Henry with only a couple of minutes to go. Henry beat his former team mate Luzhny foe pace on the edge of the Wolves' area, turning one way then the other, before smashing an unstoppable shot into the far corner. Arsenal 3 Wolves 0

Being a fan means that you hope for a miracle, but even the most hardened fan couldn't have expected anything from this match. Being so utterly out-played is something we are becoming accustomed to, and I suppose we all hope for the opportunity to be outclassed by the same teams next season.

Unfortunately Dave Jones' post-match rant against his players doesn't inspire confidence (in me, or probably the players). Portsmouth haven't got a massively better squad than Wolves, but they came to Highbury and got a creditable draw (and would have got a win if it wasn't for a debatable penalty decision) - so Jones incessant rants against the quality of his own players sounds increasingly hollow.

The next match is a definite must-win. Again.
