Wolves let a precious victory slip through their fingers at a rain swept
Molineux on Wednesday night.
A point hardly seemed just reward for another battling home display in front
of a 27,000 crowd.
With DJ staying away due to a virus it was left to new number to Stuart Gray
to issue instructions from the bench. Woves were looking to wipe out the
memory of that bitter and embarrassing 5 - 1 opening day defeat at the hands
of the Lancashire club.
Camara and Iversen were preferred upfront with forgotten man Blake making a
surprise return to the bench.
Wolves attacking the goal in front of the SouthBank struggled to get into
gear and created little in the opening exchanges. The visitors also looked
a little slow off the mark. Blackburn had a penalty appeal refused by ref
Barry on 13 minutes when Butler made a clumsy challenge on Cole.
On the quarter of an hour mark the harsh realities of premiership football
were there for all to see. Firstly, Rae was denied by an excellent challenge from Taylor just as he was about to shoot following a cross from Newton. Then the quick thinking visitors swept up the pitch in one breathtaking move. Emerton took the ball all the way to the by line skinning Naylor in the process. The Australian winger fed the ball to Cole who smashed it into the roof of the net. Wolves 0 Blackburn 1
Bitter disappointment at both ends of the pitch in just under a minute.
Wolves are made of stronger stuff these days and seemed to up the tempo
after conceding the early goal. Wolves went close with Camara and Newton
either side of the half hour mark.
Blake replaced the injury cursed Iversen on 32 minutes after the Norwegian
failed to recover from an earlier challenge.
Wolves continued to press yet again and Camara still frustrates as he yet
again puts a shot wide. Blackburn were forced to replace the injured Short
with Johansson, but the new defender held firm as the visitors went in to
half time protecting a 1 nil lead.

Wolves started the second half stronger and alleged transfer target Yorke
replaced Gallagher in hope of grabbing another goal.
Just after that Wolves dominance paid off. Butler rose above a statuesque
Blackburn defence to nod in Rae's inch perfect cross Wolves 1 Blackburn 1
Wolves were now dominating and 10 minutes after drawing level the home side
took the lead. Blake's touch to Rae gave the Scotsman just enough space to
curl home a brilliant shot.Wolves 2 Blackburn 1
Wolves then seemed to sit back on the lead and let Blackburn make all the
running. One tome Wolves target Baggio replaced Gresko and the Italian had
a hand in the late leveller. His curling free kick was met by an unmarked
Yorke who's downward header beat Oakes with ease.Wolves 2 Blackburn 2
Yorke could have given Blackburn all three points with just a couple of
minutes left. The ex Villa man pulled his shot badly wide after being
played in by Cole.
The final whistle was met with mixed emotions by the home crowd, another
spirited display ruined by awful defending.
Wolves are a much improved side then the one hammered 5 - 1 back in August,
but have they improved enough? Only time will tell...
