Match Report by JD Wolf

A trip down to one of the capitals least fashionable clubs was always going to be difficult. Not only are Charlton in fine form at home but were aiming to be the first club this season to do the double over Wolves. This may have been completed but only with the help of some very poor refereeing and dodgy linesman decisions.

I enjoy my ventures down to London - it always gives me a bit of a buzz! However the bus this time was almost a big red one, as we almost didn't make the tube due Simon Burley's - "Station Assistant" verbal attack on Fat Stat, whilst the Deck Shoe and Stuperstitious had a laugh in the background. With that out of the way we made our way to the ground, past some interesting xmas lights on a house which almost took me back to Low Hill.

The game kicked off with Wolves fans in full and usual voice whilst Charlton were very quiet. Butler was suspended so was replaced with Clyde, whilst Ince returned from his virus to replace the out of form Kennedy and Wolves reverted the oh so tried but not trusted 4-5-1. DJ also returned from his sick bed to watch the proceedings.

The first chance fell to Wolves on 6 mins as Blake's close range header was expertly palmed away by their keeper Kiely - the first of many fine saves he did (shame he didn't have the mare that he had in their inept performance in the FA cup). The first half was pretty open as the game went from end to end, with chances falling for both teams. Euel missed two very good chances on his 100th Charlton appearance and I remember saying that he wouldn't miss a third - he didn't!

The game changed on 36 mins when Cameron was harshly booked for a tackle on one of their players, contact was made but he won the ball. Just two mins later, whilst attacking, on the edge of Charlton's "D", Rae was hacked down in exactly the same way - no foul. As Wolves players stopped to complain, the ball was hoofed up to Di Canio on the half way line who quickly kicked the ball forward, where Euel was clearly offside - as Irwin requested the correct decision, Euel calmly ran on to fire home. Wolves players and fans were obviously upset and strangely - almost as if the ref realised he had messed up with the foul decision ran over to the linesman to see whether he would bail him out of a difficult situation. The linesman didn't and the goal stood. Charlton 1 Wolves 0

The valley then echoed with "cheat, cheat cheat" and "1.0 to the referee" but to no avail. Half time came around quickly and the ref then booked Ince for complaining at the half time whistle. When will we ever get a break from the men in black?

Half time Charlton 1 Wolves 0

Wolves picked the tempo up in the second half and belittled their position in the league. Luzney replaced the injured Naylor at half time and although slow his experience showed as Di Canio became a virtual spectator. Whilst Camara changed from his first half red boots to his usual orange "shooting boots" for the second half.

Kiely played a blinder in goal for Charlton as he did well to deny a Blake shot and then later a fierce Newton shot as he tried to score against one of his former clubs - nice to see the Charlton fans give him a warm welcome at the start of the game. Camara, whose shooting seems to have improved slightly recently (could it get any worse?), had a well worked effort hooked off the line by Fish.

The game effectively ended as a contest on 79 mins as a rare excursion up to the Wolves box saw the ball whipped in and as Irwin cleared he saw the ball unfortunately bounce back off Euel and into the net. Charlton 2 Wolves 0 An unfortunate and unkindly event which knocked the stuffing out of Wolves players and fans alike.

Wolves have now taken only two points from a possible 33 on their travels this season and so points to where our problems lie. Curbishly was kind (and probably embarrassed by the result) as he said in his after match blurb that Wolves were unfortunate and could still beat the drop but for a little luck! But its obvious that refs favour the more established premier teams and so if we can't take our chances of putting the ball away then really there is little hope.

DJ summed it up by stating that we are playing well and getting beat, but would rather play poorly and win!

To sum up the day the train back was deemed to be dry - as the police were expecting trouble and so with no beer the trip back to God’s own country seemed longer than it should have.

With games against Manure, Liverpool and the arse to come over the next few weeks and virtually no new signings the future certainly doesn't look old gold and black.
