And the premiership adventure continued with a visit from the Arsenal. Given their present form, games could not be any tougher than this - but surely that's what it should be like in the best domestic division in the world.
Heavy rain for the last week, topped off by a vicious swirling wind, could have helped even the game up a bit, but lets not forget that Wolves are essentially made up of 1st division players whilst Arsenal are packed with foreign mercenaries, including a £20M substitute - worth more than Wolves team put together. A humbling like that of Man U would be nice but not expected - although the announcer before the game tried to whip up a bit of encouragement before the game by letting the visitors know what happened here a few weeks ago.
With Ince being suspended Wolves were forced to change with Cameron playing alongside Rae in midfield and Ganea partnering Cort up front with Miller dropping to right wing. An attacking formation, but wake up DJ, Miller is NOT a winger!
The game kicked off 5 mins late (I wonder whether Arsenal were trying some psychology?) and in somewhat subdued fashion, as both sets of fans were maybe a little hungover from the night before. Strangely - and the first time I have seen it this season - Arsenal fans sat down for virtually the whole game and made very little noise, almost as if they were overawed by the occasion and the ground. Maybe they were apprehensive of the day's play? Who knows and who cares?
Arsenal kicked off and showed some early pressure whilst Wolves were trying to "get in their faces" - but the conditions didn't really help. Arsenal found it difficult to keep hold of the ball and make any telling passes - the trademark of their game. In the 9th minute the home team and fans were stunned as a lucky break saw the ball fall to Bergkamp whose first time shot somehow found its way past Jones and into the net. Wolves 0 Arsenal 1 and Wolves up against it. The goal knocked the stuffing out of Wolves, who bravely tried to get back in it. Kennedy was running for the ball for a change, but he was lucky to only receive a yellow card as his ugly two footed tackle could have easily got him sent off. The ref and the linesmen were as usual supporting the "established" teams by awarding some ridiculous decisions - one in particular saw Ganea given offside, when the whole Arsenal back 4 appealed at once and the linesman took a full minute to raise his flag knowing full well that he wasn't.
Arsenal put on some pressure and went close twice before Wolves dogged determination began to show through, with Wolves obtaining more of the play. A freekick by Irwin sailed agonisingly close just before Wolves got what was deserved. On 25 mins Wolves drew level with a rare set piece goal. A Cameron corner was sent over deep for Craddock to head back into the danger area and Ganea swept the ball into the net from 12 yards out. A goal he enjoyed so much that he ran into the south bank to celebrate with the fans - earning himself a booking. Wolves 1 Arsenal 1 and I must admit it was nice to see us score from a corner and nice to see us score at the south bank end for a change.
The goal gave Wolves added impetus and Arsenal had piles of pressure to contend with. Just before half time some neat passing saw Cort put through on goal, but he hit his shot tamely at the keeper. A little later a Kennedy cross was volleyed on by Cameron which found Ganea in space on the penalty spot, but he dallied too long with the ball and gave Campbell time to smother the ball (comment edited out to save lawyers bills - editor). Miller had a chance to make history but his shot was high and wide.
Half time Wolves 1 Arsenal 1
Wolves started the second half a little jaded and gave the advantage to the visitors. On 51 mins a rare decision given Wolves way saw a freekick given in a similar place to Irwin's first half attempt. This time he was even closer as he saw his effort bounce off the top of the net, with their German keeper well beaten (Wolves fans singing the dambusters tune brought a chuckle midway through the first half). The Arsenal, whose players - especially Pires - are experts in cheating and diving were getting little from the ref this time and Ganea's attempt at copying Pires could have given us a penalty, but of course the ref was having none of it.
On 56 mins the Spanish £20M wonder-kid came on for Bergkamp and just 2 mins later it paid dividends. Some neat play whilst Henry was offside saw the ball eventually put through to Henry whose shot luckily squeezed its way under Jones' body. Wolves 1 Arsenal 2 and just 5 mins later Wolves were given a mountain to climb. The ball was hoofed over and uncharacteristically (at least I hope so) Jones stayed on his line (Oakes styley) and with Wolves thinking it was going out for a goal kick, Vieira's long legs hooked the ball back in for Toure to head home from 2 yards out Wolves 1 Arsenal 3 and Wolves seemingly out of it.
The game drifted out as Wolves couldn't exert any pressure or get back into the game - Ince being sorely missed and the game drifted out to Wolves' first home defeat since the collapse against Chelski in September.
A result not entirely unexpected and I'm not going to worry too much. There were several plus points from this, notably the partnership of Ganea and Cort looking as if it could pay dividends very quickly. Ganea looks very powerful kick and with an eye for goal - Steve Bull-esque, whilst Cort holds the ball up well and with his 7 foot body manages to get his head on most balls. Kennedy looked like he tried and so maybe his confidence will return.
The battle for premiership survival is far from over and a massive game is now on Tuesday as Wolves travel to bottom club Leeds.
Arsenal at the moment are probably the best team in the country - lets not forget that this is a position once held by Wolves - albeit 40 years ago, but every dog has his day and what comes around goes around.
As for all the glory hunters - especially the Sunday press, in particular the "*****" whose nonce of a reporter probably wasn't at the game and is only interested in *******************! I wonder who you will be supporting in 5 years time? - No doubt the Sunday *****'s reporter will be fawning over some other foreign player; maybe - just maybe - he could be dressed in old gold and black!!(comments edited to save on lawyer's bills - editor)
Back to reality on Tuesday, a result that is achievable and one that could put total panic in the bottom half of the premiership table.
Come on you Wolves
