Battling Wolves crushed Carling Cup winners 'Boro with a spirited performance at Molinuex on Saturday.
Wolves were looking for their first home win since February and the imminent threat of relegation meant it was now or never for DJ's men.
Clyde came in for Irwin as the home side shaped up in the familiar 4-4-2 formation. 'Boro, playing all in red, arrived from Toxic Teesside with Danny Mills in defence, the home crowd still baying for his blood following his tunnel bust up with Paul Butler in November.
The game started slowly with the new crowd favourite Okoronkwo showing some assured touches as Boro tried to find a way through.
Wolves first chance fell to Kennedy. The in-form Irish winger headed just over after meeting Newton's cross with a fine leap. Just minutes later Newton should have given Wolves the lead. The former Charlton man pulled down the ball brilliantly from Kennedy's cross only to shoot wide with just the keeper to beat.
Wolves attacking activities had given Mills a brief rest bite from the barrage of abuse, but normal service was resumed when 'Boro regained possession.
With Both home strikers looking lively it was no surprise when Zenden conceded a free-kick in a dangerous position. Naylor's 20 yard free-kick was cut out by Mills, cue more abuse from the Molinuex masses.
Wolves broke the deadlock just before the half hour mark. Clyde, who is showing great potential at right back, sent in a perfect cross for Cort. The 2 million pound man rose above Danny Mills to head home to give Wolves a deserved lead Wolves 1 Boro 0
Mendieta looked Boro's main threat as he pulled all the strings in the visitors midfield. Jones had to be alert to tip over a dangerous cross from the Spanish superstar.
Both sides created half chances as the half finished with the buoyant home crowd still berating Boro's bald number 15.

Wolves kept up the momentum of the first half performance with Camara giving Boro's defence a torrid time.
Juninho looked quite for the visitors and never really looked like breaking through Wolves well organised defence. Maccarone however did force a good save from Jones with a stinging shot.
Wolves should have doubled their lead from a Kennedy corner. Newton had a shot blocked and then Camara saw his curling shot saved brilliantly by Schwarzer.
Wolves finally made it 2 on 62 minutes. Cort's headed flick on was met by a superb acrobatic volley by Camara. The ball clipped the upright before bouncing in to send Molineux wild. Wolves 2 Boro 0
Boro thought they had hit back straight away but Ehiogu was rightly booked for turning in Zenden's cross with his hand.
Wolves were given a golden opportunity to make it 3 in the dying minutes when ref D'urso awarded a penalty. Boateng's rash challenge on sub Rae gave Camara the chance to double his tally form the spot. The man with the orange boots saw his weak penalty saved by Schwarzer.
The final whistle meant Wolves finally got a much needed win and sent Mills & Co back to Radioactive Riverside with nothing.
Wolves still look to be playing for pride after a Pompey shock win, but with a Cort /Camara strike force gelling nicely the future looks as bright and orange as Henri's boots.
