What can I say? Here we are again. I'm normally optimistic at the start of a new season, but I can't help but feel a little jaded by the events of last season. Even so its almost impossible to quell the butterflies at the thought of a new attempt to scale to the top and finally show all those people that we can be a great football team again.Bradford's manager, Nicky Law, had already got me angry by doing a Nigel Worthington and saying that Bradford had nothing to lose, but Wolves were expected to win. I hoped that it had made the players as determined as me. Add Bradford to that list of teams that I hate.... The game saw Irwin's and Ingimarsson's debuts but Ince was considered not yet match fit. Sturridge was, as expected, also out, injured. The early encounters were scrappy, and the first real chance was to Bradford. They seemed to be trying down their right wing a lot and from one such attack a deep cross saw the Wolves defence go to sleep. Ward got a free header, but he headed it down giving Butler the chance to hook it clear on the bounce. An early scare for Wolves. Bradford didn't look like a team who hadn't had a proper pre-season. They looked more like a team who hadn't been paid and were seriously putting themselves in the shop window. Maybe that's the key to motivation? Sir Jack, take note. During a Wolves attack the ball spun free and Blake, a bit surprised to find the ball at his feet, was clearly tripped by their central defender. The ref gave no foul and the centre back seemed to accuse Blake of diving. Blake - as we are used to - took exception and seemed to head butt the Bradford player. I thought it was a red card for sure, but he got away with a yellow, which was the same colour card the Bradford defender got. Blake, when he was nearly through, won a corner. The corner was cleared and eventually fell to Ingimarsson who had Wolves' first shot on goal. Unfortunately it was at least a couple of feet over the bar. A good bit of passing play saw Rae through but the last defender got a foot in. From the resulting corner the ball was eventually cleared - and at the other end Ward took the ball from a lucky bounce, but sent over a very weak shot. Miller had plenty of time when their leftback fell over, but his first time shot was well wide, when he probably had more time. Then Miller was sent through and was clipped in the area by one of their defenders. If he would have fallen over he might have got a penalty - but he was honest and he only got a corner. Irwin took it, but it came to nothing. Then thier center back tripped over Blake again, this time near the half-way line. From the free kick Butler gave the ball away. Finally Bradford earned a free kick from the attacking play. Their forward head butted Lescott, much as Blake had earlier - and, again mirroring the earlier incident, the ref booked Lescott as well as their forward. Lescott was obviously booked for holding his head in there. Then the deadlock was nearly broken when a Miller cross found Cameron whose shot saw their goalie provide an excellent save. The ball rebounded to Rae who gave an instinctive prod on the ball which trickled agonisingly wide of the post. Irwin then got caught out by Cadamatiri, and got himself booked when he dragged him back. Then an uncharacteristically wayward cross from Irwin eventually saw Cameron win a corner in on the opposite wing. After two attempts at the throw in Naylor's cross was headed just wide by Blake. HT: 0-0 The second half started much as the first half had started. With Wolves looking slightly the better team without dominating. Cameron robbed on of their defenders and fed the ball to Miller who shot wide. Some good play from Newton saw a dangerous Miller cross headed out for a corner. The corner, from Irwin, caused Havoc in the Bradford defence, but they eventually cleared it. Then Bradford won a corner themselves and Ward shot just over the bar. A Naylor cross saw Blake pushed over in the penalty area, but the ref didn't give it. It has to be said that he was a poor ref. Then a poor clearance from Oakes forced Ingimarsson to foul one of their players just outside our area. But, to make up for it, Oakes pulled off a brilliant save from a great free kick. From the resulting corner one of their players beat Naylor on the right wing, cut inside, but sent his shot bouncing off one of his colleagues. An Irwin corner floated into the corner and Ingimarsson - charging in and arriving late - shot just over the bar. Then in a flowing move forward, Cameron flicked the ball to Ingimarsson, whose return ball never reached Cameron, becasue he was body checked by one of their defenders. The ref. gave no foul. Then their goalie did the second of his trio of excellent saves. A free kick wa sent in, Ingimarsson headed on to Blake. Blake's shot was deflected and fell to Miller. Miller's brilliant shot provoked an equally brilliant save from their goalie. Ashley Ward nearly broke through at the other end, but there was good covering from - I think - Butler. Oakes dropped the ball from a corner which gave me a scare, but luckily the linesman spotted an infringement. With about 15 minutes to go Miller was replaced by Ndah. Ndah's first touch saw him hacked down, which won us a free kick and the Bradford player a yellow card. Cameron wasted the free kick sending it very high and wide. Naylor was back to his old self, and picked the ball up, skinned their right back but just over-ran it before he could get a cross in. Then Ndah came close to breaking the deadlock twice in the space of a couple of minutes. Blake sent a defence splitting through ball which Ndah got on the end of, one-on-one with the keeper. But the goalie came off his line quickly, saw that Ndah had it in his mind to try for the bottom right hand corner, and pulled off a brilliant stop. From the resulting corner Ndah got a free header, but pulled it just wide. So it ended nil nil. Disappointing, but on the plus side Naylor looked good, Irwin was cool calm and collected and Ingimarsson was tigerish in midfield. Newton seemed almost back to his best and Blake was good. Even Miller showed promise, if only he wasn't pushed off the ball so easily. There's still plenty of the season left, so I won't give up hope just yet..... FT: 0-0 |
