Another away match in front of a low attendance. Another five goal
thriller. But this time Wolves were on the right side of victory and
advanced - rather than cruised - through to the next round of the
Worthington Cup.
Wolves started the game well enough with several half chances falling to
Sturridge and Newton, but it was Swansea who took first blood. In the 8th
minute, Pollet - making his first start of the season - conceded a free
kick just outside the penalty area. Thomas left Oakes flapping with a well
executed free kick into the top left hand corner. 0-1
To their credit, Wolves battled back in the 16th minute. A hooked ball
into the box from Rae came to Blake who still had plenty to do to steer the
ball with his head into the Swansea goal. The goal was particularly sweet
for Blake who was incessantly jeered during the match by the home fans.
1-1
Wolves had more chances after equalising but it was City, with a small but
volatile crowd urging them on, who took the lead again. Pollet tried to
usher the ball out at the by-line but was dispossessed by Thomas.
Swansea's first goal scorer then knocked the ball across for Wood to score
from close range on the 22nd minute. 1-2
Pollet soon made amends for his mistake on the 34th minute. Blake headed
on a cross from the left and the ball fell to the Frenchman who, with his
back to goal, neatly flicked the ball into the corner of the Swansea
goal. 2-2
Wolves had plenty of possession after equalising for the second time but it
was Swansea who came closest before half time. City had the ball in the
net for a third time but the referee disallowed it for a foul on Butler.
HT 2-2
The second half was less frantic than the first and the Wolves midfield
seemed more in control. Sloppy Swansea defending on 54 minutes from a
Blake header allowed Newton in but his shot was well saved and pushed out
for a corner.
Wolves continued to pressure and on 72 minutes a good run from Newton - who
was seeing plenty of the ball - found Blake coming in from the left. His
deflected shot forced the keeper to make a great save.
Shortly after, Miller was substituted for Sturridge who had a quiet game.
One of Miller's first contributions was to take a right hand corner which
was delivered very deep. Pollet headed the ball back into the path of Rae
who launched an exocet from 12 yards, beating both the keeper and the
defender on the post. 3-2
Wolves could have expanded on their lead soon after. Miller narrowly
missed an open goal after the Swansea keeper was left marooned out on the
right. Wolves were fairly comfortable for the rest of the match apart from
one scary moment in the 82nd minute when Oakes flapped at a hopeful long
ball but Butler was on hand to clear.
Overall, Wolves deserved to advance to the 2nd round based on the second
half display in which the midfield supported the attack well. The downside
to the evening was the kamikaze defending in the first half.
Despite this, Wolves came through a potential banana-skin match and
progressed in difficult surroundings. Bring on the next round!
