Report by Bushbury Wolf

I have to admit I have disliked Leicester for some time. In the 70s I had a soft spot for them as they looked good in my sticker album, but in the 90s my mate went to University there and I was particularly unfortunate to get talking to one of their fans in a pub once. He was arrogant about his team, had a crisp on his shoulder about Wolves because of McGhee and seemed to have no respect for football as a game. He displayed the kind of selfish self-importance that you would expect from any fox-hunter. Because that's the truth about the foxes, they are called that because of the Quorn hunt which happens just down the road, when rich, buck-toothed dumb animals on horse back and wearing red jackets chase a smart fox and set dogs on it to tear it apart. Anyway back to the football.

Wolves gave a good account for themselves in this match against a side that will surely be vying for an automatic promotion place come the end of the season. In fact only a dodgy penalty decision separated the two sides in a very hostile atmosphere at the "crisp bowl". Wolves just didn't have enough guile to pull a goal back, but much of that must be down to Leicester who defended well, even after having Izzet sent off half an hour before the end.

Wolves seem to have reverted to a 4-4-2, regardless of what Davey Jones says. Wolves do seem to be more solid in this formation, but despite this, Wolves went down to an early goal for the fourth away match on the trot. With six minutes gone Dickov backed into Naylor in the area, swiveled and did a swan dive to earn himself a penalty. The ref obliged and awarded a penalty that Dickov stepped up and took himself. 0-1.

Although Wolves had conceded an early goal, they didn't lie down and piled on the pressure. Newton had a 18-yard volley saved by the Leicester goalie, Walker. Then a great shot from Blake was turned away by a unconventional, improvised save with his legs. All the chances were falling to Wolves and, after Blake put a left-footed shot over the bar, Walker again saved from a Newton shot, this time from close range. Although Wolves dominated the rest of the half, they were unable to break down a stubborn Leicester defence.

HT Leicester 1, Wolves 0

In the second half Leicester started to come back into the game as an attacking force. The game was stop-start, with plenty of cards dished out to the Leicester players. Just after Dickov went close with a volley, he was booked for a blatant handball. After that, any time a Wolves player chested the ball, or the ball came within a ten foot radius of a Wolves player's hand, the Leicester "fans" shouted "handball". It got monotonous.

On the hour mark Izzet was sent off for his second bookable offence when he hacked down Rae. Although this didn't signal the collapse of a tenacious Leicester side, Wolves were presented with their best chance of the match just after the dismissal. Hounded by Sturridge, Walker was forced into picking up a backpass and giving Wolves a freekick. Blake took the freekick to Naylor, but his shot was charged down by the Leicester defence.

Ince was then booked for kicking the ball away after Leicester had been awarded a freekick. The freekick was moved forward and finally it fell to Stowcroft, whose close range shot fizzed over the bar.

With almost the last kick of the ball Lescott was presented with an opportunity, as a poor Leicester clearance came back to him in the box, but his right footed shot was well saved (again) by Walker.

So, a disappointing result, but not a disappointing performance. This was not a repeat of Palace away or Reading at home - but it is one (or three) points that we haven't got. Lets hope they don't matter by the end of the season, because if we improve and do well this season this game was a definite six-pointer. Because Leicester will be "there or there abouts", as they say.

Whatever happens, they've definitely got a nice ground. Its just that, to be more accurate, they should have replaced the L with an N in the name of it.

FT Leicester 1 Wolves 0
