In his post-match comments Davey Jones said that Wolves' used their get-out-of-jail free card by scoring two minutes into stoppage time to draw this match. The use of the term "get-out-of-jail free card" is eerily reminiscent of what Bizket Wolf said about the recent run of results in his review of the Gills game. Does this mean that DJ reads this site? If so may I add my humblest apologies to those offered by Bizket. I had been very negative on the back of our appalling run of three straight defeats (especially in my review of the Sheff Utd match), but I think I over-reacted. After the disappointment of last season I think we can be excused for high expectations, but I -for one- realise that maybe I was too premature. I'll certainly be giving DJ some more time, especially after this result. An average-to-poor performance, but a very decent result. Isn't that the sign of a successful team? Wolves started this match well with George Ndah and Kevin Cooper forcing their goalie (Chamberlain) into saves, from a header and a free kick respectively. Then after about 20 mins Murray saved brilliantly from a diving header from Helguson, and following it up by punching the resulting corner clear. Wolves had started the brighter, but Watford came back into it, making the rest of the half end-to-end stuff. After Blake headed wide, the ball was up the other end for ex-Wolves man Dominic Foley to head wide. Back to the other end and Miller forced a fine parried save from Chamberlain. Foley then shot over the bar for Watford and then a brilliant shot by Ince was just wide of the post at the other end. Ince seems to be on the verge of scoring a spectacular goal, it would be nice if it was the match winner against Pompey, but lets not get ahead of our selves, eh? The rest of the half saw Watford dominate proceedings with shots from Glass and (another ex-Wolves' man) Nielsen, coming to nothing.
HT Watford 0 Wolves 0 Watford started the second half as if they meant business and forced Wolves onto the back foot. A brilliant shot by Helguson brought another fine save from Murray before a string of four successive corners for Watford saw the home side take the lead. Cox rose above the Wolves defence and headed in from the edge of the six yard box. The goal was a disappointing reminder of all of the soft goals scored against us by Sheffield Utd, Wimbledon, Palace et al. earlier in the season. 1-0 Watford. The goal seemed to spur Wolves on. Chances for Lescott (header), Edworthy (shot) and Blake (header) were all spurned and it seemed like this was not going to be our day. The announcement that there was going to be three minutes of time added on was greeted by boos by the Watford crowd. Maybe they sensed what was going to happen. Deep, very deep into stoppage time Edworthy crossed to Cooper whose 20-yard shot took a wicked deflection - sending Chamberlain the wrong way and the ball into the back of the net. Amazingly - the crowd seemed stunned - Wolves salvaged a point with almost the last kick of the match. 1-1 It was maybe a little harsh on a Watford side who - if they can escape financial trouble - will be challenging at the end of the season. But each battling point counts and you have to admire the way Wolves stuck at it. We'll have to play better than this on Wednesday, though - especially against a Portsmouth side who will presumably have something to prove.
