At home against a rock bottom team, who except for the last game had lost 12 games on the trot; with Wolves on a high after the harsh draw against top of the table Pompey. You would expect a rout - but this is Wolves!!
Playing against a blue and white stripey team bottom of the league and ending in Albion, well its sounds ideal; you may believe we were in the Premiership, but we aren't and will never be based on this performance. One word springs to mind - diabolical.
A minutes silence was granted before the game, for Rob Hindmarch (yes the one that scored that goal) and for Cliff Durandt, implacably kept with Sir Jack in attendance. What should have been a fitting tribute turned out to be a farce.
The fireworks returned again to greet the teams and the Brighton fans were greeted with "Does your boyfriend know you are here" - rather childish but it tickled me. However that was the last smile of the night.
Wolves began the game again too cautious, not I presume because they were in awe of them but because they thought (were told) that being patient would bring rewards. This in hindsight was a bad mistake, where are the whirlwind starts so preminesent of last season? If we had bulldozed them from the beginning this game would have been over after 30 mins. Lets make no bones about it, Brighton are bottom of the league for a reason - they are C***p; but they made Wolves look at times like a skool side.
Error after error after skoolboy error, Wolves could not string more than one pass together never mind two. There was no teamwork at all, no talking and no inspiration. Dave Jones has used his get out of jail card - how many more has he got left? This performance ranked as probably the worst of the season, it is just a good job that it came against a below average team, anyone else would have been six nil up before half time. I cannot remember seeing a game so strewn with mistakes and poor personal performances.
Wolves slow build ups were beginning to irritate the crowd and giving Brighton some confidence, then on 12 mins a quick break saw the Wolves defence part like the preverbal red sea only for one of them lot to smash the ball into the side netting. However, on 15 mins a hopeful hoof upfield saw Clyde misjudge the ball, letting the quick footed Zamora pounce, race through and lob Murray from the edge of the "D". A bad Clyde error, but why didn't the 8 foot tall Murray stand up instead of falling to the floor like a sack of spuds? A neat goal and 0.1 down.
This then became a farce as Wolves fell apart - loads of stupid errors and no passing. To be blunt Wolves were inept. Wolves resulted in shooting from distance and rarely troubled their keeper, on the other hand Murray was kept busy by the inadequacies of the Wolves team. Another error by Clyde saw one of them clean through but without the foresight to do anything with it. On 21 mins Ingimarsson directed a perfect header for their keeper to make a point blank save and then to gobble up the rebounded shot from Ingimarsson again. This was to set the pattern for the evening as their keeper (voted man of the match) kept out Wolves with some breathtaking saves - you can't help feeling that he will never ever have as good a game as this again.
With Wolves spluttering and with no idea or inspiration and settling for long range shots, half time came to a loud chorus of deserved boos.
HT Wolves 1 Brighton 1
Wolves started much more brightly - could it have got any worse? and started to test the defence with surging runs and crosses and with less long range shots. But by now Brighton had grown in confidence and were soaking up the pressure - albeit sometimes only by the brilliance of their keeper - and subjecting Wolves to counter attacks. The Wolves errors became less, but they were still having trouble passing the ball to each other. Zamora beat the Wolves defence again and when it was easier to score, must have felt sorry for the defence and so tried to pass it to a team-mate, who didn't know what to do with the ball 6 yards out. Yet another let off.
On 58 mins a fine snap shot from Rae saw their keeper make yet another good save and then have the audacity to make another fine save from Sturridge's follow up. Just 2 mins later you thought it was a goal as Sturridge robbed then raced 30 yards past a static defender only for their keeper to make yet another good save. It looked like the end and it almost was.
On 70 mins a double substitution took place with Andrews coming on for Cooper and Newton on for Ingimarsson. Andrews looked particularly fired up which resulted in a booking within 3 mins, but that's what was needed!
Then on 76 mins Wolves got a just about deserved equaliser. But it had to be a comical goal to beat this keeper. Edworthy clipped a low cross into a packed defence. Miller swung a foot out and the ball bounced off Alex Rae's backside to deflect the ball past an unsuspecting keeper - to be honest that was the only way Wolves were gonna score. The final 15 mins was one way traffic, but Wolves were clueless in front of goal.
This was a very bad result with a particularly poor performance. DJ kept the players in the changing room after the game for a "chat". But to be honest I can not see this team change. We have individually very good players but for some reason, whether its tactics or what they can not play together - and that has to be the managers fault!!
DJ you have had your chance, used up all of your cards, admit defeat and go please!
