This page contains statistics on Wolves and Sheffield United, including the current season, head to head stats and results of all games between the two clubs since 1970. It also has travel and stadium links and information. Preview Monday the 27th of May 2003 is arguably the biggest day in Wolves history. The play off final is certainly the most important single match for many decades. Wolves play Sheff Utd in the first division play off final, with the elusive, but lucrative prize of a place in the English Premier League at stake. Wolves have never before reached the Division 1 play off finals having been beaten semi-finalists against Bolton, Crystal Palace and, last season, Norwich. After a poor start to the 2002-03 season, and a pre-Christmas wobble, Wolves have done well to secure a play-off final place - ending the season in 5th place behind Reading (who they beat 3-1 on aggregate in the play off semis) and their opponents in the final Sheffield United. Sheffield United have had a wonderful season in the league and cup competitions. Third place in Division 1 and semi-final places in both the League and FA cups are memorable achievements. In fact Sheffield United have beaten Premiership opposition in the cups including Liverpool, Leeds Utd (twice) and Sunderland. It is this cup form, combined with the one-off nature of the play off final which will give Sheffield United heart. Sheffield United can also boast a better head-to-head record against Wolves, having beaten Wolves 32 times in the league, compared to 27 loses. However, although Sheff Utd finished above Wolves in the league, Wolves current form is the better, and they saw off their play off semi final opponents more easily than Sheffield United did (although the nature of Sheff Utd's fight back from a 0-2 deficit against Nottm Forest was impressive). Wolves also have a slightly better cup form against the Blades, having won 5 FA Cup and Zenith Data Systems cup meetings, compared to 4 loses. Form often goes out of the window with one-off matches on which so much relies. There's no reason to assume that this final will be any different. But if the match does go past extra time to penalties, the one worrying statistic on this page for Wolves is that Sheffield United have scored more than twice as many penalties than Wolves this season (8 compared to 3). Lets hope it doesn't get that far..... |
