Report by Nero Wolf

It had to end sometime, I suppose. But its a shame that Wolves' unbeaten run came to an end in such a disappointing way, one game short of equalling the excellent unbeaten run at the start of last season. The truth is we've not really played as well as we did last season and have been more than a little lucky on a number of occassions. Finally our luck ran out

This was a bit of a revenge match for Coventry, a fact re-iterated by Coventry's player-manager in both his pre- and post- match comments. McCallister lost two teeth in a robust challenge by Ince in the reverse fixture a mere four weeks ago. That challenge was the turning point in that fixture as Coventry looked a much weaker side without the Scottish midfielder. Today it was Wolves' turn to look lost without their aging midfield captain, as Ince was out with a toe injury (as the BBC website put it "toe nail hammers Ince"). Apparently McCallister gave Ince the dentists' bill before this match, and as a self-motivational trick it seemed to work. I'm sure if Ndah tried the same thing with Jordao, the fouling $*&! wouldn't be able to afford it.

Despite Wolves exerting early pressure we fell behind to a brilliant goal from the pumped up McCallister. A Wolves move broke down and we were caught on the break. Coventry moved the ball forward quickly and a pass from Holdsworth found McAllister just outside the box and in space. His right-footed shot flew into the top left of the goal leaving Murray no chance. But how had he been left in so much space?

Wolves were knocked out of their stride and Coventry's game plan became one of soaking up the pressure and trying to nick something on the break (if their tactics were anything different). Coventry stuck to their task well and Wolves were unable to carve out any decent chances.

A free-kick from Irwin and a header from Cole forced saves from the Coventry keeper, Hyldgaard. Rae and Cameron missed with shots, and Cole put a header over the bar. On the whole Kennedy was able to get crosses in, but the Coventry defence, especially Konjic, were able to get the ball clear.

The half ended with half-hearted boos, and a hope that we'd be able to turn it around, much like we had done against Notts Forest.

HT Wolves 0 Coventry 1

Wolves came out the blocks in the second half. Cooper replaced Andrews early on, and Wolves took on a better shape, although Cooper still can't seem to play a wide-right role.

Kennedy and Rae both missed with shots, before a fine shot from Cole forced the Coventry keeper into a save. Wolves were dominating the play, but in truth their was something missing from the attack. Coupled with McAllister's lost teeth, the lack of Wolves attacking 'bite' brought many 'humerous' headlines from the Sunday papers.

On 65 minutes the game was effectively put beyond Wolves' reach when Coventry scored against the run of play. Richie Partridge (who is on loan from Liverpool) curled a magnificent shot from left side of penalty area into the net.

If we thought Coventry had shut up shop before this, they certainly showed us how to do it after the second goal. Wolves huffed and puffed but we couldn't really make any impression on a solid defence. Rae missed with a couple of shots, and very deep into stoppage time super-sub Cooper forced a fine save from Hyldgaard. But we were not to get any consolation from this match. Although we didn't pick up any injuries, Rae got a booking which I think means he's due for a suspension. Not the best preparation for the start of the holiday season.

Wolves' win over Coventry earlier in the season came in right in the middle of an appalling run of defeats for them. Lets hope their same-score win over Wolves comes slap bang in the middle of an undefeated run for us. Another ten games undefeated should see us still around the play-offs come the end of the season, which is probably as much as we can hope for.

Still, there was something to cheer about. Villa's last minute winner against W*** Brom brought a smile to my face.
