Report by Bushbury Wolf

Last week the Sunday People reported that if Wolves lost against Leicester in the cup then Dave Jones would be sacked and Peter 'monkey heed' Reid would be made manager. Well someone must have taken notice, because today we got the team that played against Newcastle in the last round of the cup rather than the team who played against Wimbledon last week. We demolished a Leicester team who are in second place, a team who offered little - apart from a 20 minute spell in the first half which culminated in a dive by Dickov which earned them a penalty (where have I heard that before?)

Ndah showed, after a mere five minutes, why we shouldn't be fighting for a play off place but should be odds-on for automatic promotion. Leicester are thirteen points and six places above us in the league, but Ndah walked through the Leicester defence like it wasn't there. He picked up the ball on the left hand side just inside the Leicester half, with his back to goal. He turned and showed a burst of pace that left Matt Elliott dead in the water. Ndah ran at the Leicester defence, which looked as inviting as the dead sea after Moses had raised his stick. By the time the two Leicester central defenders had come across to cover it was too late, as Ndah went up a few gears, powered into the box and put the ball past Walker in the Leicester goal. A truly wonderous, sublime goal, rightly aknowledged as the best solo goal of the day on Match of the Day later.Wolves 1 Leicester 0

Not long after that an Ndah cross just eluded Miller and on 15 minutes an Paul Ince shot was easily saved by Walker. But then Leicester started coming into the game with a prolonged period of pressure. Dickov won a free kick which Rogers sent just wide of Murray's right hand post. Dickov then shot wide from inside the area after a corner. The tiny pseudo-Scot had earlier headed over, but the player whose name sounds like an insult saved his most telling part in the game until the 27th minute.

A quickly taken free-kick was recieved by Dickov in the area. He was backing into Irwin and - deciding that he could get no where legally - he turned and theatrically swan-dived for the benefit of the ref. Watching it later on the TV, it's clear that Irwin's arm was around the little one, but its obvious that Dickov was looking for the penalty and no more. The ref obligingly awarded Leicester a spot kick. Dickov sent Murray the wrong way to pull the tie level. Wolves 1 Leicester 1

With all the fans talk on discussion boards focusing on whether our poor performance in this league through the years is down to incompetent managers or fans who are too eager to boo, I wonder if the answer might lie with the Men In Black. The ref today demonstrated the sort of 'reverse-Man Utd' effect that Wolves seem to have on refs. The penalty awarded against us today, or in our last cup match against Newcastle, or against Leicester earlier in the season. What about Millwall away last season? Or W*** Brom, getting an inexplicable free kick on the edge of the box at the Whorethorns to equalise, and then blatantly targetting Rae with fouls at Molineux and getting away with it. Could the officials be a major factor in our under-achievement over the years? Just a thought.

Ndah had the next telling contribution to this game. (Incidentally, in his third game for us many years ago, Ndah had his leg broken by Jordoa, but the ref didn't even book the fouling W*** Brom player - see what I mean?) Irwin sent a free kick into the Leicester box and Ndah towered above everyone else and powered home a header from the edge of the six yard box, to restore Wolves' lead on the stroke of half time.Wolves 2 Leicester 1

Six minutes into the second half the game was finished as a tie, as an early goal set Wolves up for a commanding second half performance. Again Ndah was central, but this time the tall Londoner with an African name set up Miller. A defence splitting through ball was brilliantly anticipated by Miller, who ran through the defence, collected the ball, rounded the keeper and sent the ball into the back of the net from a tight angle. On the hour mark Ndah limped off, presumably with a re-occurance of the hamstring injury that had made him a doubt for this game. With his match-winning contribution today, Wolves could do with this kind of contribution in the match away at Sheff Wed, so hopefully Ndah's injury isn't serious. Ndah was replaced by Proudlock, who almost made an immediate impact, but his powerful right-footed shot was parried by Walker.

Proudlock was lively and he had a couple of shots on target, before Miller put the icing on the cake by completing his second half brace. This time Newton was a provider, setting Miller up for a shot which was initially blocked by Walker in the Leicester goal. But the rebound fell for Miller who stabbed it home from close range. Wolves 4 Leicester 1

This was a good performance, which only begs the obvious question of 'why can't we do this in the league?' There's no simple answer to that one I think, but I think that the openess of a one-off tie suits our play better than the kind of tactics that we often see in the league (i.e. deep, ten-man 'I don't care if we draw' defending). Still if we get the same result on the last day of the season and it sends us into the Premiership I'll not complain. I'll settle for a one-nil Walsall away-type result next week as well.

Anyway, we shouldn't be negative on a day like ths should we? 'Wolves trounce Foxes' has a nice ring to it doesn't it? I'm sure that Nero Wolf was singing 'Dickov, Dickov what's the score?' all the way home.
