Report by Nero Wolf

Wolves never cease to amaze. Or should I say appall? Or agonise? When JD Wolf said "good team aren't they" after the match, he was of course talking about Wolves and he was of course being ironic.

How many Wolves managers over the years have failed to forge a team which can be successfully consistent? Dave Jones has banished the Walsall bogey, but has failed to do the same for the voodoo that Brighton have against us. He must be tearing his hair out after this performance. Having reportedly built a side who had 'done it before' and so could take the pressure, Jones must be extremely frustrated to be in possession of a team with eggshell-like confidence.

And yet Wolves started this game as the better side and could have been 2 or 3 nil up after 30 mins. Ince shot just wide after only a couple of minutes, and then Edworthy and Cameron linked up well to set up Proudlock who forced the Brighton keeper Roberts into a good save. Soon after Roberts again had to make a save from Kennedy after a smart through ball from Miller.

Then, against the run of play, Brighton broke the deadlock. Lescott allowed Brooker too much room and his cross from the by-line was met by Zamora, whose first-time shot didn't appear to cross the line as Murray gathered, but the linesman signalled a goal and the ref gave it. Brighton 1 Wolves 0 and Brighton never looked back.

The goal punctured Wolves and they lost all of their early fluidity. It really was no surprise when Brighton doubled their lead just before half-time. Again it was poor defending as Blackwell was left unmarked to head in a free kick.Brighton 2 Wolves 0, and roll on half time so that Wolves can re-group. Or so we thought.

HT Brighton 2 Wolves 0

A good, flowing move from Brighton put an end to any lingering hope a couple of minutes into the second half. Hart sent Zamora free down the right wing and his cross was met by Brooker who sent a low shot into the net.Brighton 3 Wolves 0

Miller continued his recent good run of form by scoring after 65 minutes. The young Scot bravely dived to meet a Kennedy cross from the left. Brighton 3 Wolves 1 A smart goal, but we knew too much to hope for more

Justifying our lack of faith, Wolves deigned to give Brighton a fourth when Naylor was completely flumoxed by Hart, who drilled home the final insult only minutes after Miller had supposedly given us a life-line. Brighton 4 Wolves 1

What can you say about a result like this? This result must deeply worry everyone connected with Wolves. Why do all our teams lack consistency and why do they always seem to lose against bottom of the table clubs? After changing players, managers, coaches, managing directors and all and sundry we still are left with a team performance like this. Dave Jones must be the most worried. Not least because the pressure must now be on for the match against Rochdale next week, and it has been the FA Cup run that has kept him in his job this season.
