Report by JD Wolf

And so to Blundell Park on a cold blustery Tuesday night. How many times over the past few years has a Wolves team gone to these sort of places when the heat was on and failed? Dennis Irwin had upped the pressure by stressing the need for a few more 1-0 wins and exactly as ordered, that's what we got.

Grimsby lined up with several ex-swampies and a hyped up 5-4-1 formation, their manager stating that this line up "worked". Wolves always seem to find a packed midfield difficult to break down, so I was expecting a scrappy game. Ndah on for the injured Newton was the only change for Wolves from the ill-fated Rotherham game (although it would be my first choice anyway!).

A nervous start for Wolves saw the game being initially taken by the home side as they tried not to exit the league via the wrong end. The nervousness got to Murray on 11 mins when he uncharacteristically mis-controlled an Irwin back pass and with an attacker breathing down his neck, he somehow managed to clear.

However, the nerves settled somewhat just 2 mins later, when Wolves broke up a Grimsby attack and the ball fell to Miller whose reverse pass found Blake. Blake then powered forward in a no nonsense style and blast the ball home into the far corner of the net. Grimsby 0 Wolves 1 and oh how that goal was needed.

The goal really should have started the avalanche that has become somewhat of a trade mark for Wolves at present, but Wolves really needed a second to kill off a spirited Grimsby challenge. Grimsby had a lot of the possession, in the remainder of the first half, but had only one real goal opportunity, which Butler did well to smother out.

Miller picked up a loose ball from a Grimsby corner, he turned and ran then found a lone Ndah but he unfortunately ran out of space. Wolves looked to hit the home side on the break and this almost paid dividends with Ince going close with a diving header from a fine Kennedy cross. Ince then decided to pick up a needless booking for a gouging tackle and so is perilously close to being banned from the play off games.

The first half fizzled out as Wolves contained Grimsby who gave Murray very little to do.

Half Time Grimsby 0 Wolves 1

The second half started slowly as both teams looked to build slowly and securely. On 48 mins another good turn and show of strength from Blake, ended with his pile-driver superbly tipped over the bar by their keeper. After this Wolves seemed to slow down and allow Grimsby to come at them. Miller did manage to get the ball in the net, but his effort was disallowed for yet another offside. Cooper came on for the ineffective (and injured-looking) Ndah on 65 mins and soon had a lashing shot which went well wide. That was it really from Wolves who seemed content to sit back and see what Grimsby could do, which proved to be very little.

Sturridge replaced Miller on 82 mins but had little time and help to do anything. The game drifted out to a fine fought-out 1-0 win for Wolves - deserved and not too unexpected. It seemed as though Wolves could have easily stepped up, but maybe were keeping something back for the televised Friday game at Forest - a much sterner test!

A scrappy but steady and solid performance. The midfield did wonders to help protect a seemingly impenetrable defence at the present (6th away win in 8 away games). This result put 6 points between us and 7th placed Ipswich, but with a vastly superior goal difference and crept us into 5th spot with only 5 games to go. If 1-0 scrappy wins at this time of the year are good for Sadwell Town, then they are certainly good for Wolves.

The future's bright - the future's old gold and black!!
