Report by JD Wolf
featuring Stuperstitious Wolf

Oh my god! We killed Kenny!!! Not once, not twice but three times This match had practically everything, as two sides played tactically, weighing each other up for the predicted play-off final at Cardiff.

I was expecting some tactical changes and got them. I was hoping that Ince wouldn't play and surprising enough, he had a virus! With the way that the cheating kick 'em, spit and kill tactics of the blades, Ince would have been sent off or more likely knobbled and so it was best to save him for the finals, in reality they only managed to have a go at Ndah and Naylor but failed at both. No Irwin, Miller or Newton either - all I presume "rested".

From the start the atmosphere was electric, driving there for the first time was horrendous - no where to park, congestion on the way in (surprising as they have fewer fans than I expected) and then a hours wait to get a drink inside the ground. The programme was full of praise for Wolves however the announcements inside weren't - it was very inflammatory.

Just before kick off Naylor, inside his own box decided to kick one of the warm up balls back to the dug out. With the un-nerving accuracy of an exorcet missile his 50-yard shot smacked the back of their "pirate" mascots head. Some shot, shame he can't do that more often in open play!

The teams entered the field to the "Star Wars theme" - something that would have amused Jedi Wolf. The game started off with a bang, from the kick-off, the slippery Pescidildo pinched the ball ran through the wolves defence and almost scored but for the alert Murray. 5 seconds gone and we saw what a vibrating Pescidildo could do. With less than 2 mins on the clock, Pescidildo made the Wolves faithful moan as he pinched the ball from a sloppy Lescott pass, to run on and lob 7-foot tall Murray from the edge of the box. 2 mins gone and Wolves 1-0 down. Sheffield Utd 1 Wolves 0 The enforced Wolves changes seemed to have the Wolves defence asleep, as we took time to get going. The goal inspired the blades as they pushed forward more, Murray seemed to be having problems with his clearances and twice put Wolves in trouble. Then Pescidildo sent one of them lot through, but Murray was quickly off his line to smother the ball.

Wolves levelled the score with their first real attack of the game. Sheff Utd were defending very high up, which was a bit silly knowing the pace of the Wolves front two. This paid dividends for Wolves on 10 mins when Sturridge picked up the ball on his own half way line, turned their defender with ease and powered forward beating another as he went. The ball then came to Ndah, who I thought had nicked the ball off Sturridge rather than him passing to him and Ndah made no mistake with a low drive from the edge of the area. Sheffield Utd 1 Wolves 1 and game on.

The game opened up with both teams looking to win the game, but strangely not wanting to apply too much pressure. More clever play from Sturridge, who looked very lively, saw him shrug off their defenders and power a shot past the stranded Kenny, but his shot cannoned off the post. A bizarre event on 21 mins saw the ref suddenly pull up and blew his whistle clutching his leg. He was helped off the pitch with a pulled muscle as the crowd shouted "off, off". He was replaced by what looked like a fat balding seventy year old.

The game exploded almost immediately after as Cooper was clattered from behind (yet another example of Warnock's style of play), and -as he lay injured - Edworthy floated in a cross which Kenny tried to kill along with Ndah by headbutting him as Ndah's header was cleared off the line by some ex-Swampie. Play continued with two Wolves players lying injured on the floor. With the Wolves fans baying the ref to stop the game, eventually Ndah limped off for treatment. Rae got his own back as "if you can't beat 'em join 'em" by clattering the afore-mentioned ex-Swampie, who needed treatment off the field. Warnock's cheating tactics boiled over as just before half time one of them lot fell over feigning an elbow from Rae. The ref lectured them both but should have had Warnock on the pitch to tell him not to suggest his players to do things like that.

Wolves got their just deserts right on the stroke of half time, when Rae's tame looking volley from Edworthy's throw in, was controlled expertly by Sturridge who fired in a beauty to put Wolves 2.1 up at half time.Sheffield Utd 1 Wolves 2

Sheff Utd started the second half the better - going close several times, with the on loan "Shabba" side footing wide from a corner. On 56 mins disaster for Wolves as Lescott was very harshly adjudged to have fouled one of them lot in the area. Penalty given and Brown made no mistake Sheffield Utd 2 Wolves 2. Naylor was booked for stupidly arguing with the ref, he had already had a go at one of the linesmen earlier (as did Sturridge a couple of mins later). Then Pescidildo blew his top by trying to cripple Naylor (hoping for retaliation also!) but ended up getting booked for his poor behaviour.

Wayne Alison came on as sub, and like his name suggests he was a big girl's blouse as soon as any Wolves player came near him. How a 7-foot tall, six foot wide 30 stone bloke can be knocked to the ground so often is beyond me (more unsavoury Warnock tactics?).

The ref atoned for his earlier mistake by awarding Wolves a dodgy penalty also. Cameron was hauled down in the box as he tried to get hold of a quick Rae free kick. A harsh decision, but what the hell?. Sturridge ran over and grabbed the ball - no one else would have the chance of taking it! His was a deftly taken kick, stopping and dummying the keeper, sending him the wrong way. Sheffield Utd 2 Wolves 3 and cruising.

The play became end-to-end stuff, with Murray making two excellent saves. The Wolves crowd became buoyant with news of Sadwell Town losing by a hefty score line. Tonge came on the pitch to help lick the Blades wounds, but had little impact. Wolves almost made it 4, when Butler met Kennedy's corner, but he headed just wide - when do we score from corners anyway? However in the 3rd minute of injury time, Wolves let them back in it. Rae was on his own in the middle of the park, and a hapless hoof up field saw him try and trap in the ball whilst running forward. The ball went under his foot and fell straight to the lucky Pescidildo, who came in the box and powered a bullet shot past Murray, to even the scores, with the last kick of the game. Sheffield Utd 3 Wolves 3

At the end of the day - just like the Forest game I would have taken a draw before the start. This game was always going to be a bit nervy and it seemed, even playing with 2/3rds of the tried and trusted team, that we could have "upped a gear" and made them pay. The Blades too seemed as if they were holding back somewhat and did play a strong team in the second half but at the end of the day a draw probably suited both teams.

With the way they play I wouldn't want them in the semis as they would cripple our players just out of spite if things were not going their way. So we will see you at Cardiff for a much different game!
