Match Report by Bushbury Wolf

An advert for Sky Sports has a picture of various Premiership teams (Arsenal, Chelsea etc.) with the logo "They're Ready. Are You?" underneath. Judging on today's performance we can safely say that Wolves aren't.

Wolves hadn't played Blackburn in the top flight since 1965, which is a testimony to the long periods which both teams have spent in the wilderness. Today's match was a testimony to the recency of Wolves' stint out of the top flight and the gulf between the First Division and the Premiership.

Wolves handed debut's to new signings Craddock, Iversen and Silas while Brett Emerton got a late reprieve and was allowed to play for Blackburn. Lescott, Kennedy and Miller were all injured and their places were taken by Craddock, Silas and Sturridge respectively. Blake was relegated to the bench by Iversen and he was joined there by Oakes and Rae and new boys Camara and Luzhny.

Wolves looked out of their depth from the kick off. For the first ten minutes our goal was bombarded, with shots from Yorke, Thompson and Emerton. Unlike our new players Emerton looked a class act and Murray had to snatch a few of his crosses out of the air early on.

After about ten minutes we had our first attempt at goal with Sturridge shooting wide from an Iversen cross. It was a short respite as Blackburn continued to pressure Wolves' goal, looking for the inevitable first score.

Murray tried his best to postpone the inevitable making a fine save from a Jansen header, but it couldn't last. The resulting corner was sent to the near post by Emerton and an un-markled Amoruso sent a bullet header past Murray. Blackburn 1 Wolves 0.

The Blackburn pressure continued after the goal, with the only respite a 20 yard shot over the bar from Cameron. On the half hour mark Blackburn doubled their lead.

Thompson played a one-two with Jansen and although the ball bobbled slightly, Thompson was still able to smash a superb half-volley into the back of the net. Blackburn 2 Wolves 0.

The Blackburn pressure continued for a while after the second goal, but slowly Wolves came back into the game and could - or should - half pulled at least one back before half-time.

Good play from Cameron and Ince set Iversen through, but he mis-hit his shot to Brad Friedel. Then Cameron , who had run on to Sturridge's pass, forced a good save from the Blackburn keeper. Wolves were beginning to look they may actually have something to offer to the game, but they couldn't make their pressure pay before the end of the half.

Half time Blackburn 2 Wolves 0

Blackburn came out in the second half and played in the vein that they played most of the first half, so it was no huge surprise when they extended their lead on 50 minutes. It was also no huge surprise to find that the scorer was the talented Australian Emerton. Yorke cleverly picked him out in the area with a neat pass and Emerton unleashed an unstoppable shot into the corner of the net. Blackburn 3 Wolves 0 and cue the ironic singing of "we're gonna win 4-3" from the Wolves fans.

A tiny glimmer of - well, not quite hope, but some small piece of solace was provided by Iversen on 70 minutes. Newton, who had swapped to the left wing stormed into the box, shrugging off a couple of challenges. The diminutive Londoner then looped a great cross to the un-marked Iversen who crashed a header against the foot of the post and then followed up his rebound to crash his shot into the net from close range. Blackburn 3 Wolves 1

Rather than galvanising a fight back from the old gold and black, the Wolves goal provided the spur for the Red Bull-esque topped Blackburn to show their class. Andy Cole, on for a mere five minutes, made it 4-1 on 80 minutes. Latching on to a pass from the ever-ready Tugay, Cole sent a blistering shot into the goal at the near post. Blackburn 4 Wolves 1

There was still time for Cole to bag a second when he sped onto Tugay's superbly-weighted ball over the top, and then chipped the out-coming Murray from 20 yards. Blackburn 5 Wolves 1

This result was difficult to take, but not too unsurprising. Not many would have predicted a Wolves win, but the size of the scoreline is a major concern. Wolves desperately need a number 2 (in more ways than one), as witnessed by the complete lack of shape in the side by the end of the match. And why were we playing so many players in so many strange (out- of-) positions so early in the season? It smacks of poor planning. Wolves also need quite a few players before the end of the month or else it may all be over by the time the transfer window re-opens in the winter.

Well no one said it would be easy, but no one said it would be this hard either. I fear we will have to get used to days like these.
