Much improved Wolves claimed their first ever premiership point in a hard fought but entertaining draw against high flying Pompey. Newton came through a late injury scare to take his place in an unchanged line up from the midweek defeat at Old Trafford. With goals on the agenda home debutant Camara was pushed further to the front to give Wolves a more attacking 4 -4 -2 look. It almost paid off instantly when former Charlton winger Newton fed the ball to Cameron with just over a minute gone, but the Scotsman hit a crisp shot just wide of the Pompey goal. Wolves had Pompey on the back foot and had a promising attack squashed by Quashie's cynical foul on Rae, he was booked by ref D'urso. Buoyed by the noisy home crowd Wolves again looked to make an early breakthrough. The lively Newton was again on hand to play in Blake. The Wolves No9 lost his footing at the crucial moment much to the relief of the Pompey defence. Portsmouth then tested the home defence as former England internationals Stone and Sherringham both went close. Wolves’ best chance came just after the quarter hour mark. Camara sprung the Pompey off side trap when he latched on to Irwin's long pass. The man with the red boots shot despairingly wide whilst under pressure from De Zeeuw. With 20 minutes on the clock Wolves were proudly boasting a clean sheet. Premiership - easy. The game flowed from end to end with good attacking play produced by both teams. Wolvesagain went close when Irwin saw a free-kick hit the wall and Camara acrobatically hit the rebound into the hands of Hislop. With half hour gone Stone was next into the ref's note book with a bad challenge on Newton, "Same old Pompey always cheating" rang round the ground as Wolves lined up for the free-kick. Hislop failed to clear Cameron's free-kick and his weak punch fell to Ince but the midfield power house could not find a way through. Minutes later Butler was harshly booked for a challenge on Ayegbini, the Wolves defender looked to have won the ball. Pompey still looked good on the break and wasted a glorious chance late on, Berger left a bad taste in the mouths of the visiting fans when he flashed his header wide. The half drew to a close with another booking for Pompey, when Schemmel ended Cameron's run with yet another bad challenge from the away team. Premier league status has sadly not changed the Pompey Policy "If a man goes past you scythe him down with all the skill and grace of an arthritic elephant". Half Time Wolves 0 Portsmouth 0 Wolves again started the half well. Good work from Camara and some uncertain Pompey defending gave Wolves two earlier corners. Both kicks were unconvincing. Another booking for Portsmouth followed when Zinkovic pulled back Blake, minutes later team mate Ayegbini also saw yellow for a robust foul on Naylor. On 62 minutes ref D'urso let play continue as Pompey Striker Ayegbini lay injured. Boss Rednapp could not contain his fury and let rip at the 4th official. Much to the visitors' disgust the ref sent him to the stands. That lot certainly wear their hearts on their sleeves, actually they wear them smack bang in the middle of the shirts!!! The game still ebbed and flowed and the home side had a goal ruled out for offside against Blake when Camara scored from 12 yards. With just under 20 minutes left Pompey almost produced a winner when Sherringham rounded keeper Oakes only to see Butler block on the line. Gudjonsson replaced Rae late on for his Wolves debut. With just minutes left Irwin showed Portsmouth how to tackle correctly when he slid in to deny Ayegbini with a superb challenge. Four minutes of time allowed still wasn't enough for either team to break the deadlock. Wolves are at last showing some back bone and were unlucky not to pick up all 3 points. Some extra cutting edge up front could see Wolves make a genuine bid for Premiership survival, something that looked impossible just over a week ago. Full Time Wolves 0 Portsmouth 0 |
