At last we have it, our first home goal, together with our first win of our first premiership season. Its taken 351 home premiership minutes to score but the celebrations of the crowd made it well worth the wait! A result which belittled the expectations of the so-called Sky pundits, with Manure City coming into the game 4th and obviously expecting Wolves to roll over and die. Stuperstitious Wolf had managed to get himself on the pitch again (see my day as a mascot at the Newcastle game). This time it was for the half time penalty shoot out, so we arrived especially early and had a wander around the ground. One of the officials explained how DJ insisted that the pitch is well watered before and during half time, so Stuperstitious was expecting to play on a sponge but it wasn't that bad. Myself and Fat Stat thought that - considering the previous few home results - this tactic was more to the likings of the away team (!) and ought to be changed. On a cool, wet and windy day, DJ changed the team around and to accommodate the returning Blake, Miller and Camara; he went for a more attacking 4-3-3. This being more to fans pleasure, but with the gung ho tactics of the bubbly haired Keegan one - I was expecting a lively game and a few goals. Wolves started brightly and on 4 mins neat interplay between Naylor and Blake set Cameron free, whose cross just eluded Miller, Ince picked up the ball and forced a corner. From this Butler turned the ball over to Camara whose wild shot was sent high over the bar. His bright orange boots seemingly are not his shooting boots. Just later Naylor intercepted an "av it" up field and with the ball going out made no mistake in kicking the ball out, blasting it high into the Steve Bull stand - presumably Ince's (and many others) words still echoing inside his head after last week! Wolves continued to press forward in-between some flashes from the opposition - whose corner taking was leaving something to be desired. Wolves looked comfortable, without really threatening the goal, Ince Rae and Cameron were dominating midfield and the later produced the first shot on target on 16 mins when his 30 yard drive was easily gathered by Seaman. Oakes just later did well to save at Anelka's feet, but it mattered not as the whistle had already gone for a foul on City fan Butler. Wolves were continuing to apply pressure and the speed of Camara was causing city some problems - shame about his shooting boots. Blake was then clattered from behind and left in a heap inside the "D" but as usual ref Winter saw no problem with it, the crowd was singing the often heard "you don't know what you are doing". Some lengthy treatment was given and Blake was allowed to continue the fray. Just later Rae was hacked down - again with no foul given, city continued to play and only an offside stopped an almost certain goal. The fans and Wolves players were now very incensed at the injustice, but that's what you get for being one of the "minor teams". The half finished as it started with Wolves in control but lacking that killer touch. Half Time Wolves 0 Man City 0 Stuperstitious Wolf lined up to take his penalties in the north bank end. Wolfie was in goal and Stu went fourth. Unfortunalty Wolfie must have been having coaching lessons with Oakes as he saved both of Stu's penalty kicks (or maybe Stu had borrowed Camara's orange boots for the half time break)! Still Wolfie couldn't you have given him a chance as he had got his celebrations planned well in advance? In the second half Wolves continued to press forward and you could sense that a goal would kill the game, as City proved to having an off day. Wolves pushed forward again and Blake's first time snap shot was cut out as Seaman was all over the ball. A little later Camara dispossessed the only Chinese player in the premiership and ran 40 yards, but his cross was just too short for Blake. Cameron then crippled the aforementioned Chinese chappie and from the free kick Oakes had to have two goes at collecting the ball. Wolves continued for the win and Rae went close with another piledriver, then Cameron's dangerous cross was plucked out of the air by Seaman. City were looking a little shaky at the back, but the game looked to beheading for a goalless draw. Trevor Sinclair - yet another hopeful summer signing for Wolves came on and City then had a brief spell, getting a couple of corners and then Anelka shooting wide. Rae then went very close with another blistering drive after a weak clearance by the city defence. This seemed to give a boost to Wolves and they got their just rewards on 75 mins. Camara's cross was cut out feebly by the creaking city defence and the ball fell back out to Camara, whose perfect cross met the virtually unmarked Cameron to head home, as Seaman was squirming in the box. Wolves 1 Man City 0 and the fans went absolutely wild (including ironic chants of "we're gonna win the league"!). Camara was replaced by a home debut for Kachloul and Fowler came on for Anelka. However this spurred on City who had a couple of chances that went close, one from a corner needlessly given away by the so far impressive Butler, whose attempted clearance spun off his foot to go behind him for corner. Naylor managed to hoof the ball into the upper sections of the Billy Wright as he looked to make up for his mistake last week at Bolton. The game nervously drifted out and Wolves had achieved their first Premiership win. This was an impressive performance against a time riding high in the league. Every ball was contested and we looked like a team capable of surviving in this league. I am not going to get too carried away but a couple more games like this and confidence builds on more confidence etc. Now if we can only get the gifted Camara fitted with some better boots, we could be having a decent xmas break.
