Match Report by Bushbury Wolf

After the traumatic, historic and heart-stopping Premiership game last Saturday, there were probably a few of us Wolves fans who were looking forward to a bit more of the type of game that we witnessed against Darlington in the last round. A competent, no frills (or thrills) win against a lower league side. These hopes were boosted by the injury worries that Burnley had - they didn't even have enough players to fill the bench, having only 4 players available beyond their starting 11.

Burnley's ex-Wolves defender Mo Camara lined up (as captain) against his old club. Mo-Mo was a popular, although comical and gangling, left back who couldn't break into the side last season, after featuring in the side the season before. A good acquisition for Burnley and by all accounts he is proving just as popular at Burnley for his "unique brand of attacking defence" as IC Birmingham put it.

On the other side, there is still a question about whether Dave Jones will sign Gazza - who last played in England for Burnley. If he did come to Wolves I suppose it would make a change for him from going to the dogs (apologies for the poor joke). Burnley boss Stan Ternent allegedly urged DJ to sign Gazza up, because he "still knows how to pass a ball". Now there's a thing.

Wolves started with 4 changes from the starting line-up against Leicester. Luznhy, Ince, Silas and Iversen replaced Irwin, Rae, Cameron and Blake. Gudjonsson started again, even though he was taken off after just twenty minutes on Saturday. Ikeme was on the bench in place of Murray. He apparently has another injury (as does Lescott) - someone really should sort out our medical staff...

Burnley were on a decent run of form and it showed on the pitch. Very early on Blake (Robbie not Nathan), forced Oakes onto a fine save with a low drive. But Wolves weren't as bright as Burnley, but neither were they quite as sluggish as against Leicester in the first half. About ten minute into the match Ince saw his effort cleared off the line.

But Burnley still looked dangerous and only a smart save from Oakes denied Moore on the 20 minute mark. Facey had an effort over the bar and not to be outdone in that department, Iversen put a header wide at the other end. Wolves were being caught off-side too often and Burnley finished the half as the better side (as Jones admitted afterwards).

Half Time Wolves 0 Burnley 0

However, Jones' half-time team talks are quickly gaining magical status. Within three minutes of the re-start Wolves were one-nil up. The again-impressive Camara (Henri not Mo-Mo) slipped a pass to Miller who drilled his shot into the net from 6 yards. Miller had become a dad for the first time the day before, so lets hope this goal has broken the waters and that we see a re-birth of the Miller of last season (sorry for the poor jokes again...). Miller's first goal of the season and well-deserved on his improved performance.

Wolves now started to dominate, as we would have hoped they would in the first half. Craddock fired over when it looked easier to score, and Iversen had a header cleared off the line. Oakes saved a Robbie Blake header which provoked extra-time anxiety, but the tie was finally put to bed in the 80th minute.

Camara forced a corner which was sent to the centre of the goal by Silas. Craddock met the cross with a diving header that went through a sea of players before nestling in the back of the net. Wolves 2 Burnley 0 and 'Job Done'.

There was still time for Camara to send a shot just wide, but all in all we should be relatively pleased with the performance, and very pleased to get through to the next round with the minimum of fuss. And this time we don't have to be hoping to get a Premiership team, as we are playing them week-in, week-out. A nice easy tie with a Nationwide team like Albion will do nicely...(just joking...)
