Match Report by JD Wolf

Wolves came to a sticky end against the toffees at Goodison in a dreary game of non- comitial and sometimes desperate football.

With England on top down under and playing against an Everton team struggling for form, I was hoping for something out of this game. Alex Rae turned out for his 500th league game and in front of 40,000 spectators in premiership football it was something he deserved.

Wolves lined up in a more attacking formation of 4-4-2 with DJ sticking with a transformed Iversen and Camara up front. As Cameron was injured DJ stuck with the two "wide" midfielders of Newton and Kennedy.

Wolves started the brighter of the two teams taking the play to Everton, as the home team looked a little nervous in front of their partisan fans. However, for all of their possession and trying, Wolves only had a Camara snap shot, which went "surprisingly" wide for their efforts.

The game changed on 16 mins as Everton took the lead. A loose ball in the middle of the park found Radzinski and as the Wolves team backed off he took the ball forward and let fly with a hopeful shot from 35 yards that somehow winged its way into the back of the net. Everton 1 Wolves 0 and Wolves looked dumbstruck.

But within 3 mins the nightmare got worse as wonderkid Rooney beat one player before delivering a hopeful hoof into the area, where somehow an ex-swampie rose above Irwin to header home. Everton 2 Wolves 0.

Wolves were now on the back foot and were in truth never able to get back into the game. It wasn't because the toffees excelled but Wolves were just inept particularly in front of goal.

The first half played out with Wolves desperate to defend as Everton went close several times and should have really scored a hatful, but wasted many chances.

Half Time Everton 2 Wolves 0

The second half started with Wolves making two changes with Blake coming on for the ineffective Iversen and Miller replacing the woefully inept Newton. Wolves battled and tried to get back into the game, but in truth lacked the vision to take advantage as Everton seemed to back off. Gudjonsson replaced the tired looking Rae on 65 mins, but did little to change the game. Wolves had to wait until the 70th minute before having their first attempt on goal as Blake with plenty of room headed the ball directly at their keeper when it seemed easier to score.

The game dragged out to its boring conclusion with precious few moments for either team.

This was a disappointing performance after the spirited displays recently, hopefully it was just a one off and we can get back to a more positive show on the TV against Newcastle - and we all know what happened last time Wolves played at home against Newcastle on the TV ( No Stuperstitious not your performance - see here).

Wolves need Cameron, Rae and Ince for an "in-your-face" game against the magpies.

Full Time Everton 2 Wolves 0
