In the end, you could argue that the difference will be down to finishing. The contrast between the marksmanship of Kanoute and Keane compared with a woeful attempt by Henri Camara acutely illustrated this. But conceding 10 goals in North London in less than a week doesn't really help either!
Wolves again seemed ill prepared against a team that are nothing more than average. Jones persevered with 4-5-1 at White Hart Lane where the only impressive thing were the TV screens which replayed all key moments and flashed latest scores up (Note to Moxey: this is sort of stadium entertainment that fans want). Shame that the replays didn't make pleasant viewing for most of the afternoon.
The warning signs were evident from the start. On 6 minutes, ex-Wolves defender Richards had a chance but shot straight at Oakes. The Wolves defence were doing their best to play a tight off-side system, a dangerous strategy against a live-wire Tottenham attack.
After 29 minutes, the defence was sprung. King fed the ball through to ex-favourite Robbie Keane who made no mistake from 20 yards. To be honest the marking should have been better but Keane demonstrated what Wolves desperately don't have -an instinctive goalscorer. The morgue that they call White Hart Lane briefly rose from the dead.Tottenham 1 Wolves 0
But they were soon back on their seats practically from the next passage of play. Ince took the ball off the feet of a dithering Kennedy at the edge of the box and swept the ball into the bottom corner. Tottenham 1 Wolves 1
Wolves sensed that they might actually get something from the game and suddenly people were putting passes together. In fact, both teams could have scored again in the first half. Keane scuffed wide when it seemed easier to score and Ince saw a close-range diving header come back off Kasey Keller.
Half time Tottenham 1 Wolves 1
Wolves fans hoped that the re-start would carry on much in the same manner. However, on 50 minutes yet another cross was delivered by sick-note Darren Anderton and Kanoute headed home to give the home side the lead for the second time. Tottenham 2 Wolves 1
The lead wasn't necessarily deserved at that point but next came a defining moment in the match. Sturridge had replaced Blake on 57 minutes and looked lively. After good work on the right he pulled the ball back to Camara, the keeper was already grounded but he shot over from just five yards out. It was a gilt-edged chance and Henri hung his head in shame.
Unfortunately, the defence must also have been hanging their heads. On 75 minutes, Keane got his second goal with a good volley from a Konchesky cross. Tottenham 3 Wolves 1. That really knocked the stuffing out of us and it was no surprise just eight minutes later when Keane side footed in his hat-trick after Oakes only managed to smother Anderton's cross. The hat-trick celebration was muted, no trade-mark cartwheel, the Irish striker nearly looked embarrassed. Well, he is a Wolves fan.Tottenham 4 Wolves 1
On 84 minutes, Wolves looked like they might make the scoreline a little more respectable. After good work from Sturridge again, Rae arrived unmarked on the left and slotted the ball past Keller. Tottenham 4 Wolves 2
As some sort of reward (the sort that only exists in Dave Jones's head) Rae was replaced by Kenny Miller on 86 minutes. But any hopes of a late revival were dashed right at end by a spectacular long-range finish by Dalmut, a substitute himself. Tottenham 5 Wolves 2
Depressing stuff. The club are heading towards relegation like a missile and it's hard to find any positives at the moment. Confidence is evaporating, there is no depth in the squad, we are haemorrhaging goals and Jones doesn't seem to have any answers. It would be nice to see some sort of forward planning otherwise our first, long-awaited Premiership venture will have all been in vein. And that's the really depressing thing.
