For the second time in a week Wolves proved that they could compete at this level, as another red-shirted team from the North West got a shock, even though Liverpool - unlike Man Utd - managed to take a point. After going a goal down in the first half, Wolves piled on the pressure in the second half and got the point that was the very least that their endeavours deserved.
With Carl Cort watching from the stands, we at last some saw action on the transfer market - albeit that the jury is still out on whether this particular off-field activity will match the 0-5 thrashing by Chelsea or the 1-0 win over the Premiership Champions.
Before this match I had a dream which JD Wolf interpreted as a premonition that the ref. would be biased towards the Liverpool - and this turned out to be the case. Despite the diving antics of Kewell and Owen, some terrible tackles (in the second half) and Gerrard's attempts to get Ince sent off (see later), we still managed to pick up more bookings than they did. Still we are getting used to the bias of the refs. against the smaller teams of the Prem.
In actual fact the officials had already done them a favour by postponing the match when they were weakened by injury. Apparently this match was the first time in the league this year that Houllier had been able to play Steven Gerrard, Harry Kewell, Michael Owen and Dietmar Hamann together.
The first goal-mouth scare came from Liverpool when Heskey latched onto a headed clearance by Irwin, sending a shot across goal, bringing a great one-handed save by Oakes.
Iversen then spurned a great chance. After some great approach play, with Miller and Iversen exchanging passes and slicing the Liverpool defence open, Iversen found himself one on one with Dudek in the Liverpool area. Unfortunately the Polish Keeper was up to the task, taking the ball off Iversen's feet.
Then after some more great approach play down the left wing - this time from Naylor and Kennedy - Iversen laid the ball back to Ince whose shot from outside the area fizzed just over the bar.
Liverpool nearly broke the deadlock when - after a patient build up in our right back area - Owen took the ball on the edge of the area and darted into the box eluding both Craddock and Butler. Oakes again made a great one-handed save and the rebound was booted clear before Heskey could put it into the gaping net.
Heskey again shot wide, from a great chance before Liverpool opened the scoring. A long floated pass from the half way line found Cheyrou in a bit of space in the Wolves box. With no one able to close him down he ran to the edge of the right side of the six yard box and put the ball past the advancing Oakes. Wolves 0 Liverpool 1 A poor end to an exciting first half.
Half time Wolves 0 Liverpool 1
Wolves started the second half in a very determined fashion, against a Liverpool side who seemed content to sit on a one-nil lead - even against a second from bottom team! How times have changed!
At one point the ref. got in the way of a Liverpool move, gifting Ince the ball. But the ref. was blocking Ince's path so he pushed him out of the way and surged forward - only to be literally pushed off the ball by a Liverpool player - of course the ref. gave nothing.
Despite dominating play, Wolves didn't create a clear cut opening until the 65th minute. But what a chance it was. A fine build up - where the ball was swept from the left to the right wing culminated in a cross by Cameron from the edge of the Liverpool area. Miller brilliantly cushioned the ball with his head for Iversen, who - six yards out and in plenty of space - disappointingly drove the ball over the bar. Looking at Iversen with his head in his hands, Cort must have been eager to put pen to paper thinking that this was one of the goal scorers in competition with him for a first team place.
Danny Murphy then made two misses which - on reflection - left the door open for Wolves. The first opportunity he ballooned over the bar from just inside the area with plenty of time and space. Then from a similar position, the ball was fed to him by the Owen, and although he managed to beat Oakes the ball came back off the foot of the upright. A let off for Wolves.
There then ensued a strange series of corners which could easily have seen Ince and Gerrard sent off. Ince was pulled down as one of the corners went in, and Gerrard objected to Ince's appeals for a penalty - after a bit of tussle and a lecture from the ref., thing quietened down until....
Then, with full time fast approaching, Miller scored for the fourth time in three games, following up on his Premiership opener 4 days previous. A simple hoisted ball from Irwin was headed on by Cameron and Miller, on the left hand side of the goal, found himself about 15 yards out and with a bit of space. Miller then sent a low left foot shot under Dudek and into the back of the net. Wolves 1 Liverpool 1 He is at last showing the predatory skills from last season which had seemed to have escaped him for so much of the season.
This draw, following hot on the heels of the historic win over Man Utd has certainly lifted the atmosphere from the beginning of the season. Some of the songs were excellent, - "bring back my video, bring back my stereo" to the operatic tune of Paolo Di Canio and "Does the social know you are here??
If only our away form could improve, we might yet do the impossible. Portsmouth away is now, quite obviously, a massive game.
