Match Report by Bushbury Wolf

One point was the reward for a stubborn performance as Wolves - aided by the woodwork - kept themselves in with a fighting (but outside) chance of Premiership survival.

Wolves made the trip to Fratton Park replenished with two new recruits. Neither one was the much-needed full back, but the addition of a goalkeeper was highly important. I must admit after Portsmouth's targeting their fouls at Blake and Ndah at Molineux last season, I was frightened that a similar targeting of our squad weak spots by Harry's boys would lead us keeper-less for the rest of the season. However the signing of Jones allayed that fear, but I admit I was shocked by the inclusion of Jones in goal above Oakes, who had been pivotal in the Liverpool and Man Utd results. Afterwards Dave Jones said that Oakes wasn't very happy to be demoted to the bench. Who could blame him?

My fears regarding the Premiership's dirtiest team (47 yellow, 3 red going into this game) were unfounded and Portsmouth played decent football. Portsmouth tried to play the ball on the ground and this tactic was no doubt based on the conditions. The wind was strong and swirling - the weather was awful, as is the ground. Lets hope that we aren't playing Portsmouth next season - for the right reasons, of course.

It was a hectic start and Portsmouth were unlucky not to be in front after a mere four minutes. Berkovic latched onto a defence splitting pass from Taylor, took the ball in his stride, but his side-footed shot came back of the post. An early let-off for Wolves.

Jones, after avoiding the embarrassment of having to pick the ball out of the net as his first meaningful action on his return to Wolves, then showed that his kicking hasn't improved since he was last at Wolves by gifting a chance to Sheringham. A mis-hit clearance by Jones fell straight to the former England striker, but he somehow contrived to shoot wide. Phew! Another let off.

Despite that early slip-up, Jones had a great game. He seems able to command his area in a way that Oakes can't, but Jones' kicking is somewhat suspect. We are probably swapping one weakness for another if Dave Jones is going to continue picking his namesake.

In fact, the Jones' both have Southampton connections, and the Dave one joked that he didn't know who the crowd were continually singing about - him or the goalie. Whichever the crowd's anger probably inspired Paul Jones to a great performance. He made terrific save from a long-range Berger shot and then he managed to touch Primus' header onto the bar.

At the other end Cort looked like a good acquisition, even though he is short of real match practice. He spurned the best chance for Wolves when he headed a Cameron cross wide. When set clear by Kennedy, Cort dallied for just too long , allowing Hislop, the Portsmouth goalie to smother the ball. Miller was off-form, sidefooting an early chance straight at the goalkeeper.

Our second half performance are generally better than our first half ones, so Jones would have been the happier of the two managers, going in at half time without conceding.

Yakubu started the second half for Portsmouth and the Nigeria striker made an immediate difference. Yakubu had not arrived at the ground until after the match had started, having been sent home from the African Nations cup for ignoring a curfew. He didn't seem to upset by the ordeal and early in the second half he chased a long ball and forced Jones to punch clear. Then Jones had to save smartly as he punched the ball clear after Yakubu had latched onto Sheringham's header on.

Despite the Portsmouth pressure Wolves hung on resolutely the early second half pressure subsided as Wolves came more into the game. In fact we could have snatched a surprise winner when Hislop fumbled an Irwin cross.

Very late Wolves were again saved by the woodwork as a Pasanen freekick was deflected by Naylor onto the post. Sherigham smashed the rebound wide.

This was the first Premiership draw at Fratton Park and Portsmouth's excellent home form had seen them beat Liverpool and Bolton earlier in the season. Taking into consideration our terrible away form, this was a great result - particularly as Leeds and Leicester both lost at home.

Although we definitely had luck on our side, we survived this must-not-lose game. Had we lost then the six points that Portsmouth would have been ahead of us would probably have been insurmountable (especially as we play Arsenal next week). As it is although Portsmouth have to remain the favourites to stay up we are definitely still in with a chance. And who would have thought that after the 0-0 draw between these two teams earlier in the season?

Last thought? Awful ground.
