A not so Hyypia day for Wolves as Sami's last gasp (where did those 3 mins come from?) header ruined a 91 minute solid performance.
The last time these two teams met at Anfield in the top flight was a little over twenty years ago, Wolves edged that game 1.0 with Liverpool going on to win a treble that year. As for Wolves the season ended with the first of 3 successive relegations! Coincidently that game twenty years ago was the last time that Wolves won an away top-flight game. I was hoping for some good omens this time, however it was to be cruelly dashed.
Dennis Irwin was rested and Mark Clyde came in to replace him, whilst the out of sorts Cort was replaced by Miller as DJ went with the two forwards that I would play together at the moment. Liverpool were on a high after their 3-0 win over Pompey, with Owen returning to some sort of goal scoring form.
A scrappy game played in swirling winds probably contributed to Wolves style of play and Wolves seemed to have the better of the first half. On 5 mins the lively Ganea found loads of room to run down the wing and fire in a lovely cross which just eluded the head of the flying Kenny Miller, the ball fell a little unkindly to Rae whose shot was easily saved by Jumper Dudek. Liverpool began to wake up after 15 mins and Murphy's shot was well parried down by Camara of all people, whilst 5 mins later Jones had to do well in saving a shot from the "not so fair play" Aussie Harry Kewell. Dudek had to be quick off his line a few mins later as he saved on the edge of the area from Ganea, before one of the controversial moments of the game.
Heskey somehow managed to keep off his backside for more than a few mins when he dispossessed Craddock and ran for goal, well inside the box with Heskey just about to pull the trigger, Craddock somehow got his foot to the ball from behind and took Heskey's legs with him. Unsurprisingly the "big Fellow" fell over and the ref waved play on with 40,000 Scousers shouting for a penalty. Houllier was so red faced that he had to complain to one of the officials. In truth it probably was a penalty but when do we get any luck in this division?
Ten mins later Ganea again tested the keeper with a long range shot before Owen shaved the upright with another. Camara's electric pace was beginning to trouble the Liverpool defence and his pass found Miller whose shot was desperately close.
Half time Liverpool 0 Wolves 0
Two mins after the break Camara's electric pace broke through the shaky Liverpool defence and fired in a twenty yard shot which Jumpy Dudek turned around the post. Ten mins later Gerrard's low shot was well saved by Jones, before the 'pool made a double substitution. Unfortunately Hesky was replaced by Baros and one cheating diver was replaced with another (Diouf on for Kewell). Baros had an immediate effect as a strong run down the wing forced a corner, from which Hamann's fierce drive caught Naylor full in the face.
A snapshot from Rae almost caught the keeper unawares, but the 'pool were now pushing forward in numbers, as Wolves looked to cling onto a point they clearly deserved. Newton replaced the lively Ganea on 71 mins, a decision which I couldn't understand as Kennedy looked the more tired of the two. Liverpool were now dominating the game and Newton cleared off the line whilst Riise and Owen could only find the side netting.
However deep in stoppage time Hyypia deflated the team and fans alike with a sucker punch from a corner. Liverpool 1 Wolves 0
This was a disappointing result from a gutsy battling Wolves performance. When will we get any luck, or more to the point when will we learn to defend corners and set pieces?
With other results "not going our way", the league position now looks perilous. The fat lady is primed, warmed up and waiting in the wings, lets hope Chelski put too much into their midweek champions league clash as if we are 6 points adrift this time next Sunday the fat lady will be in full voice.
Full time Liverpool 1 Wolves 0
