Wolves snatched a dramatic last gasp point in a highly entertaining yet ultimately frustrating draw at a sunny Molineux on Saturday. With a new signing and an injury crisis easing week by week DJ made changes from the side that crashed at Portman Road on Bank Holiday Monday. In came debutant Seol Ki-Hyeon on the left and Carl Cort was rushed into the side quicker that he goes past speed camera's. Clyde started at right back after his magnificent performance for Northern Ireland in mid-week. Top of the table Wigan came to Molineux with the potent attack of Ellington and former 'Sandwell Town' man Roberts spear heading a 4-4-2 formation. Wolves started brightly and looked like a team determined to take all three points for the 1st time this season. Seol, the first South Korean to play in English football, soon got a taste of Championship football when he was left on his arse by a robust challenge from Bullard. The home side were making all the running and a tidy exchange of passes between Naylor and Newton allowed Miller a 25 yard shot that Filan saved with ease. Naylor was next to cause panic in the visitors goal mouth with a floating cross that both Cort and Newton failed to convert. Cort looked sharp after his long injury lay off and forced Wolves first corner when Breckin cleared his low cross. Another sub-standard corner was cleared as usual but a ball played back in found Lescott who had beat the offside trap superbly. With Cort & Miller screaming for a simple ball the young defender blasted the ball behind them much to the disappointment of the goal hungry South Bank. Just a minute later Wolves were still looking unstoppable and finally opened the scoring with a quarter of an hour gone. Lesscott played a great ball through the middle to pick out Miller in the box. The Scot held off a challenge before flicking the ball past Filan into the roof of the net. Wolves 1 Wigan 0 Just as the dust settled on the opening goal Ellington forced Jones into action with a crisp shot. Wolves now looked vulnerable and withdrawn yet could have doubled their lead soon after. Newton's fierce cross flew across the goal mouth with Cort just inches from making contact with the ball. Wigan were growing in confidence and leveled on 23 minutes. Bullard's floating free-kick was headed in by the unmarked Jackson giving Jones no chance. Wolves 1 Wigan 1 Another sloppy goal conceded from a set piece quickly becoming the norm for Wolves beleaguered defence. Wolves were now looking a pale shadow of the team who opened the game and were struggling to contain Wigan's front two. Ellington smashed the visitors into the lead just before the half hour with a ferocious dipping 25 yard shot that crashed off the underside of the bar. Wolves 1 Wigan 2 A strike reminiscant of the goals traitor scum Henri Camara produced towards the back end of last season. Seol looked good for Wolves making simple and efficient passes, always looking to find a gold shirt. Wigan finished the half well in control much to the disbelief of the Molineux faithful. Half time Wolves 1 Wigan 2 Wolves started the second half brightly but could have slipped further behind when Ellington's quick freekick clipped the post. Wolves were then gifted the ideal opportunity to equalize when Olofinjana was fouled in the box. With mixed fortunes from the spot this season Miller once again stepped up to take the penalty. The Scottish forwards weak effort was easily saved by Filan. (Sir Jack could have struck the ball with more venom). Cooper replaced the injured Naylor and immediately gave Wolves attacking options a more balanced look. On 65 minutes it was good work from the Wolves winger that pulled the home side level. His teasing cross was met by Miller who guided a perfect header into the corner of the net. Wolves 2 Wigan 2 The home side pressed for a winner but still had to contain the threat of Wigan's front two. With fifteen minutes left Lescott fouled Roberts in the area. The former Swampie man gave Wolves a lesson in penalty taking by slotting the ball past Jones. Wolves 2 Wigan 3. With the clock showing 90 mins gone the table toppers looked to be heading for another 3 points until Cameron snatched a dramatic equalizer. The late substitute latched onto a through ball to beat the off side trap and roll the ball past the helpless Filan. 3-3 The final whistle ended Wolves hopes of snatching a winner but a point was better that nothing from this rollercoaster of a game. Wolves 3 Wigan 3 With the starting 11 looking stronger, DJ is running out of excuses as to why a win keeps eluding us. With more bad defending (set pieces especially), and the failure to play well for a full 90 minutes, a top two finish is starting to creep away. A morale boosting win has to come sooner rather then later. Final Thought.....Converting from a striker to a sweeper is a difficult move in this modern game but one such individual has proved it can be done successfully. The floors at Ashwell open prison have never looked so clean... Full time Wolves 3 Wigan 3 |
