Pressure mounted on Dave Jones as Wolves slumped to another disappointing defeat in the capital. Travelling down to the Big Smoke with JD and Superstitious emotions were mixed. What Wolves would we see? The team that won back to back championship away games or the team that crashed to a home defeat against lowly Cardiff. Still with bacon butties and a few cold cans we allowed ourselves some optimism on the train journey down. Under-fire boss DJ replaced calamity keeper Paul Jones with Oakes and drafted in fit-again Lescott in attempt to sure up his leaky defence. Both teams lined up 4-4-2 with West Ham playing controversial loan signing Davenport in defence and opting to leave ex-England man Sheringham on the bench. West Ham started well attacking the goal in front of the Centenary Stand, where we were situated joined by Fat Stat and a 3000 strong Gold and Black Army. Wolves first chance fell to Ince whose every touch was greeted by a chorus of boo's from the Hammers fans, the former West Ham mans Volley was dealt with easily by Bywater. Wolves defence then suffered a heart-stopping moment when West Ham front man Harewood put the ball in the net. The linesman's flag for offside quickly silenced the home crowd. With both sides showing good work rates and plenty of commitment the game went from end to end but neither team could create a clear cut chance. Miller just failed to reach a through ball from Olofinjana and Zamora wasted a good headed chance. West Ham pressure seemed to pay off in the 22nd minute when Zamora slotted home just yards out. The linesman once again flagged for offside. Harewood's decision to pass instead of shoot proving costly for the Hammers. Minutes later Oakes justified his selection by denying the home side with a breathtaking save. Beanpole Davenport rose to meet Erthington's cross with a bullet header only for the Wolves number 1 to tip the ball over the bar. As the half drew to a close Wolves produced their best chance of the game when Miller's shot was tipped onto the post by Bywater. The Scottish striker had turned his man well and was unlucky not to add to his 7 goal tally. On the stroke of half time Seol wasted a good free kick when the South Korean blasted his effort at the wall. Half Time - West ham 0 - 0 Wolves With news filtering through that West Ham refrained from selling beer a dull and boring 15 minutes half time break seemed in the offing. That was until the Hammerettes appeared to revive the dying art of synchronised dancing. For the 1st time this season the Wolves fans were treated to the spectacle of seeing 11 people performing in harmony each knowing what the other was doing. Plus tiny white shorts tighter that Sir Jack's Premiership purse strings all added to the entertainment. JD and Fat Stat particularly enjoyed it (married men as well, shame on them!). (Not true, honest - Editor) West Ham brought on Lomas and Rebrov as the home side looked to take the game to Wolves. The hammers still had the majority of the play but Repka had to be alert to head away under pressure from Olofinjana. Sheringham replaced Zamora on the hour as manager Pardew was desperate for some cutting edge. Five minutes later Cameron replaced Seol on the left, a role the Scotsman has struggled to cope with before. With a quarter of an hour left and Wolves seemingly heading for a hard earned draw disaster struck. Lescott mis-controlled a simple through ball allowing Sherringham to pounce, race clear and slot a sweet strike past Oakes. West Ham 1-0 Wolves Sheri leaving a nasty taste in the mouth! Wolves struggled to mount any serious pressure in the last 10 minutes, with Clarke on for Naylor and Andrews replacing Olofinjana just adding to the confusion. Even Newton seemed at a loss as to what formation DJ was looking to play. In truth, the final minutes were more likely to see West Ham score than the desperate visitors. The final whistle ending another depressing 90 minutes for the Wolves faithful. Wolves could argue that they deserved a point from this game but once again some harsh truths were exposed. Playing two anchor men midfielders stifles creativity. Cort's return has prompted even more long ball football, and defensive mistakes are still proving costly. More worryingly though the incoherence of the final 10 minutes proved DJ is a man losing the plot. Final Thought - How many games has dave Jones got left...? Full Time West ham 1 - 0 Wolves |
