Wolves made it three home wins on the spin by felling feeble Forest. With better weather around Molineux, the players were more able to play good football with the hindrances that had mired their play in the last game removed - the pitch had dried out as well (sorry DJ). Caretaker Boss Stuart Gray in charge for his second game in a week opted for the 4-4-2 formation favoured so much by former boss DJ. Kennedy failed a late fitness test so Naylor slotted in at left back. The visitors line up included highly rated Andy Reid who proved to be the match winner when the sides met at the City ground in October. Wolves started the game attacking the goal in front of the South Bank, which let the board know in no uncertain terms that Megson is not wanted at Molineux. Chants of "Stand up if you hate Megson" & "Moxey out" rang around the ground. Forest looked lively in the opening minutes with Reid turning well only for his pass to Evans to be ruled off-side by the linesman. Loan star Bischoff then put his defence in trouble with a poor header that fell to Nowland, the new signings 25 yard shot was blocked well by stand in captain Cameron. Wolves attacking play looked subdued but the home side finally threatened with some direct play from Cameron. The Scotsman’s surging run was ended by Evans well timed challenge only for the ball to fall to Cooper who found Newton, who in turn found Cort with a superb cross. The £2 million strikers firm header was denied with an excellent save from Gerrard. This roused the home crowd who sent another volley of abuse to the board with chants of " Dave Jones' Gold 'n' Black Army". Both sides then wasted decent opportunities. Firstly Wolves spurned a good free kick from the edge of the box, Cameron played the shot to Naylor who blasted his shot wide. Then the visitors should of made more of slack defending when Dawson rose to head Reid's cross only for the ball to fly wide. Forest's Louis-Jean then had a nightmare few minutes - he was booked for a foul on Cooper and then he gave Wolves the perfect chance to take the lead when he got a little too close to Cort in the box. Ref Ryan gave a penalty for shirt pulling, Forest's flamboyant Frenchman trying to swap shirts 70 minutes to early. Cooper smashed the ball down the middle to give Wolves a second successive penalty success. Wolves 1 Forest 0. The Wolves winger has single-handedly banished this season's spot kick blues earning his chants of "Cooper Man" to the superman theme tune. The home sides joy lasted only six minutes as Forest levelled from a set piece. Reid's corner kick was flicked on by Morgan and Johnson’s attempted overhead kick found it's way into the back of the net much to the delight of the Forests pitiful away support. Wolves 1 Forest 1 With 1/2 hour on the clock Cooper wasted a good 25-yard free kick opportunity when he curled his effort into the Forest wall. Five minutes later Forest should have taken the lead when King burst clear only to blast his shot wide of Oakes goal. With the half drawing to a close Wolves went desperately close to taking the lead. Miller’s crisp shot was saved well by Gerrard only for the ball to fall to Newton. Evans and Rogers blocked the Wolves man's effort only enough to see the ball hit the bar twice before bouncing out for a corner. Forests brave defensive efforts came to nothing as Wolves regained the lead from the resultant corner kick. Bischoff met Cameron's corner kick at the near post with a superb header that gave Gerrard no chance. Wolves 2 Forest 1 The clinical execution of a corner not something we've become accustomed to down at Molineux, not from the home side anyway!! Oakes had to be alert a minute later to save Reid's close range effort. Half Time Wolves 2 Forest 1 Forest replaced the wayward Louis-jean with Perch but a defensive change couldn't prevent Wolves winning an early corner. Cooper's corner was thumped away by Gerrard only for the ball to get back to the impressive left winger. The penalty hero unleashed a fierce strike which flew inches wide. Wolves fans then breathed a sigh of relief when Lowe handled in the box, ref Ryan waved away Forest's desperate appeals. Wolves were having the lion’s share of possession and should have extended their lead on 55 minutes. Cooper left Perch for dead before picking out Cort with a precision cross. The lanky Wolves striker's bullet header crashed against the bar with keeper Gerrard in no mans land. Minutes later Olofinjana saw his 20 yard shot go just wide of Gerrard's post, in truth the big Nigerian should have done better. Forest offered little in attack but King broke with pace only for Lescott to pull him back earning Forest a dangerous free kick. Reid fed Johnson who slotted home only for the ref to force a re-take because the Eire international had took the free kick too quickly. The second attempt hit the wall and flew harmlessly over. Forest were then guilty of two bad challenges that enraged the home faithful. Evans & Thompson both earned bookings for crude tackles. Miller gave way for Sturridge as Wolves saw out the latter stages of the game in relative comfort. The last few minutes saw wolves win three corners in a row as Forest struggled to get out of their own half. The final whistle gave the majority of the 27,000 crowd a positive end to another turbulent week. Much debate surrounds the name of the next manager with many fans thinking DJ should still be in a job. The chants of many in the crowd show Megson would be a hugely unpopular choice. The board need to be strong and choose the best man for the job based on football reasons and nothing else. This is a talented bunch of individuals that badly needed moulding into a team as soon as possible. Final Thought - DJ did a great job for the club and was undoubtedly betrayed by the board with the Premiership funds, but signings like Silas and Paul Jones were down to the Manager no one else. The disastrous start to this campaign proved too much for the board, playing players out of position, losing to inferior sides and snarling post match interviews about 'pressure' became all too common. The club was right to act quickly and stop the rot before our league position got any more embarrassing. Thanks for the memories Dave, but you had go! Full Time Wolves 2 Forest 1 |
