Match Report by JD Wolf

The hand of Hodd took the sting out of the Hornets as Wolves forced a fine away draw.

I always like the London games, the train journey down with a few tins and the chance to meet up with a couple of the London and Bristol Wolves contingent. Watford was no exception, this one spiced up with a drink in a pub full of Hell's Angels (The Flag next to the station) and then onto the Moon Under Water. This one in the town centre full of Wolves fans in good voice.

The ground itself still has the need to finish off the one stand, which gives it an uneven balance, reminiscent of the old Molineux in the bad old Battie days. However, Wolves are in a very different era now, with a need to gain points in these sort of situations.

Wolves made two changes to the no show shambles from a few nights previously, with Kennedy moving into midfield/left wing, giving Naylor his chance to impress the new manager at his natural left back. Lowe replaced Clyde in a straight right back replacement. All this meant no place for Cameron, who didn't even make the bench.

Watford started the game brighter, forcing a free kick near the box inside the first minute, which Cort dealt with easily. Naylor then did well to cut out a Watford attack before showing why he is so inconsistent by falling to sleep and allowing a cross to be made. The ball drifted over the out of position Lowe to find a Watford shirt who smashed the ball home from 6 yards out. Watford 1 Wolves 0 and same old story for Wolves.

The goal spurred on Watford who then twice went close, before Wolves started coming back into the game. A deflected Naylor cross was flicked on by Sturridge but the Watford keeper did well to save it. On 20 mins a neat passing move saw Kennedy find Sturridge, but unfortunately Sturridge's shot bounced off the post. Wolves were starting to open up Watford, as the formation of the team seemed much less disjointed than in previous games. Wolves were then awarded a free kick in a dangerous position, but Kennedy's cross was easily dealt with. Just a few minutes later, Cooper from 30 yards out teed up to try and repeat his wonder strike against Rotherham - this time he could only slice it high and wide.

With Wolves enjoying the majority of the play, they earned there first corner on 35 mins. This was dealt with easily by the Watford defence, however the loose ball was picked up and Naylor's far post cross was flicked back by firstly Craddock and then Lescott for George to thump home a cracking volley. Watford 1 Wolves 1

Watford were forced back into life and created two early chances, but Wolves seemed much more confident now and forced two successive corners, but the Watford keeper was in fine form. Naylor was booked for a rash challenge before Sturridge was again denied by the Watford keeper.

Half Time Watford 1 Wolves 1

On our last visit to London the half time interval was warmly received as the Hammerettes did their little thing, sadly there was no Hornetettes to warm the now chilly night air. I wonder if Molineux could shine to some Wolfettes prancing to Hodd and Wadd's Diamond Lights??

Wolves started the brighter and soon forced a corner, but Wolves failed to capitalise. It became end-to-end stuff as both teams looked for a much needed win. However Wolves looked to be fading as they struggled to find their first half form. However, on 65 mins some neat play opened up Watford, with Lowe finding Kennedy, who passed to Cort for the lanky striker to fire inches wide of the post.

Oakes had to be alert moments later, before Miller replaced Sturridge as the later started to look jagged. Just then Craddock was a hairs breadth away from getting on the end of a Cort flick on.

With 5 mins remaining Hoddle made his second substitution, with cooper replaced by the South Korean international Seol. However, although he looked lively, he had little time to really show what he is capable of.

Wolves almost nicked it right at the end as Naylor galloped down field but instead of picking out his man he drilled in a fierce cross to no one. Cort and Millers faces were enough to tell the young left back what they thought.

Whether Hoddle fired up the expensive failing Wolves team or whether they just had one of those days, time will only tell.

However there was definite better shape to the team - who have sadly had to play out of position, under DJ and then his mini-me Gray. Hopefully this can be expanded on with some tactics developing enabling confidence to grow. At times this season I think that I must be paying for the sins of a former life, as some woeful performances has been pretty painful to watch!

I must admit that Hoddle was not top of my wish list - he has failed to do anything of real importance since Swindon and the reports in the paper about his apparent wish to go back to 'Tottingham' makes sense now of his desire to only have a six month deal. However I like the fact that he has stated that he will go full out to at least make the play off places (lets face it anything can happen in this division and we are only 8 points off 6th place).

Time will tell if Hodd can make something of an underconfident and disjointed team to gain his large bonus.
