Carl Cort gave Wolves fans an early Christmas present with a dramatic injury time equalizer against Crewe. Much was expected of Glenn Hoddle's first home game in charge but once again Wolves let themselves down with another disappointing home performance. Hoddle made two changes form the team that drew at Watford last week. Lowe making way for Newton (a winger playing at full back - haven't we been down this road before?) and spoilt brat Miller replacing hamstring victim Sturridge. Crewe came to Molineux boasting the Championships leading scorer Dean Aston. Both teams lined up 4-4-2 with Wolves again playing the diamond formation in midfield. Wolves started the game strongly with Cort only inches away from meeting Naylor's left wing cross. The home side won the first corner of the game but Foster headed away Kennedy's cross. Wolves were enjoying most of the possession but were almost caught out when Crewe turned defence into attack and found Aston with a cross fired pass, the in-form striker beat Craddock but dragged his shot wide. Olofinjana was once again proving to be the driving force and unleashed a long range shot which was blocked well by Foster. Ref Curson awarded Wolves a free-kick 30 yards out when Cort was fouled by Walker. Kennedy rolled the ball to Andrews, whose fizzing shot went just wide. Just after the half hour mark Wolves carved out their best chance of the game. Cooper found Newton on the right wing and his inch-perfect cross picked out Miller. The Scottish international rose like a toy being thrown from a pram and headed the ball against the inside of the post when a goal seemed certain. Just five minutes later Crewe grabbed the opening goal against the run of play. Vaughan played a quick free kick to Ashton and the prolific marksman turned and shot giving Oakes no chance. The ball flew in with a little help from Lescott. Wolves 0 Crewe 1 At this time of the year a much talked about bloke dressed up in red and white is supposed to bring joy not misery. With the half drawing to a close Wolves again surged forward and Lescott was denied when Ince dove at his feet to make sure Crewe went into the break with their lead in tact. Half Time Wolves 0 Crewe 1 Wolves started the second half again dominating and Miller was unlucky to be penalised for hand ball when he charged down Ince's clearance, still it allowed the Scot to indulge in his favourite past time - moaning! Ref Curson bearing the brunt this time. Five minutes into the second half Wolves should have been level, Kennedy teased the Crewe defence before picking out Olofinjana with a superb cross. The big Nigerian headed towards the bottom corner only for Ince to palm the ball away with a fine save. Despite plenty of possession Wolves looked weak front of goal and Olofinjana summed up the nervous display by trying to pass to Miller when a good shooting chance opened up. Cooper made way for Cameron as Hoddle looked at give Wolves fresh attacking impetus. The Scottish midfielder combined well with Newton to allow the pint-sized right winger to hit a fierce cross that Sorvel cleared. Crewe rarely looked liked adding to their lead until Aston crashed a thunderous shot off the underside of the bar. Seol replaced Olofinjana as the home faithful urged the team forward in search of a goal. The South Korean tested Ince with a long range effort as Wolves laid siege to the Crewe goal. With home fans leaving the ground in search of Christmas cheer somewhere else (the pub looking the best option) Wolves grabbed a late, late equalizer. The lively Seol worked himself some space to cross the ball to Cort. The lanky striker finally beat Ince with a fine header. Wolves 1 Crewe 1 The cheers hadn't even died down when the ref called time on another miserable Molineux display. With just 2 points from the first 2 games Hoddle has hardly set the place alight and his diamond is failing to shine. A much needed win is surly top of the boss' Christmas list other wise the bunch of turkeys will keep getting stuffed well into the new year. Final thought - The busy Christmas period can often define a season, the poor performances have to stop now or mid table mediocrity is all the new year will bring to the long suffering fans.
