2001-2002 Season Review
Part 2 - The Players

On this page: [Best Player] [Worst Player] [Whole Team Rating] [Players]

Summary

Best Player: Rae (6.98)
Team Rating: 6.45 Opposition Rating: 6.40
Best game: Walsall away
Worst Game: Man City home

These ratings are based on averages from a number of newspapers and websites. Each player has a rating for each match based on the average from up to seven different sources. The team averages are the average for all players in a game. More about the rating system here.

Best Player
Rae was the best player for the season, with an average rating of 6.98 for the whole season. This compares with the best player rating of 6.74 for the 2000-2001 season (Ndah). March was Rae's best month when he averaged 7.28 (month by month analysis here).

Wolves next best player was Lescott (6.66), followed closely by Sturridge (6.63), Newton (6.63) and Kennedy (6.60). Sturridge got an average of 7.57 in November, the highest monthly average of any Wolves player.

Rae was also had the most best player awards with 25% of all votes (56).

Worst Player
Branch was Wolves worst player with an average rating of 5.65, closely followed by Ketsbaia (5.67). Ndah (5.84), Halle(6.00) and, most worryingly, Miller (6.02) make up the bottom five ratings for the season.

The decline in Branch and Ndah's ratings is striking. Last year Ndah was the best player with 6.74 and Branch was second best with a rating of 6.72.

Team Rating
The average team rating throughout the year was 6.45, and the oppositions' average was 6.40. Last years average for Wolves and the opposition were 6.42 and 6.37 respectively.

Walsall away saw the highest team rating with the whole team averaging 7.14. The lowest rating for the team was against Man City at home (5.56)

Players
The table below shows ratings for all players, laid out in the classic 4-4-2 formation. The highest average rated player for each position is marked in deep orange, indicating our best team.

The goalkeeper is obviously Oakes, as no other goalkeeper played for us last season. He got an average rating of 6.35. Although he played much better at the end of the season, his average has declined from last season, when he had a rating of 6.66.

The defence doesn't throw up any surprises either, except for perhaps the out-of-favour Naylor (6.26) getting a higher score than the crowd-pleasing Camara (6.22). The central pairing of Lescott (6.66) and Butler (6.55) and Muscat (6.26) at right back complete the best defenders.

The inclusion of Dinning in the midfield is a little surprising, but his average score (6.57) was only slightly higher than that for Cameron (6.54). Perhaps there was a little history between Dinning and Dave Jones, which led to him leaving? The rest of the midfield is as would be expected, with Newton as right winger, Rae in the centre and Kennedy on the right wing. These ratings do not include the play-offs, otherwise Cooper might have sneaked in with his excellent display in the home game.

Proudlock gets a higher rating than Blake and so is paired up front with Sturridge, who is unsurprisingly our highest rated forward. Blake's excellent start for Wolves tailed off spectacularly in March and April. In reality Proudlock and Sturridge do not play well together in my opinion, because they both need to play alongside a target man. The poor rating of Blake and Roussel must mean that Jones will enter the market for a big forward in the close season.
