Report by JD Wolf

More anticipation and expectation as a win tonight takes us back to the top of the league and with a game in hand. December looks hard work, with 7 tough games, so a result is very much needed tonight.

Wolves started with the same line up as Saturday and Dave Jones' pep talk to Dean Sturridge ringing in his ears, ie a couple of goals in the next couple of games and the signing could be permanent. Just before I continue, in response to Jedi Wolf - if Fat stat looks like Moxey (and prove it Fat Stat, either way by showing us all foto's), do you look like Chewbacka? [to satisfy JD and Jedi (names are a bit similar are you related?)I've hidden a link to my other website (wedding) somewhere on this site which has a picture of me on the home page - Fat Stat] and no I can't remember the last time we scored direct from a corner, can anyone else help?

Barnsley lined up with a 5-4-1 formation, not the one to win rampantly. Both teams started well, but on 9 minutes a Naylor cross saw Sturridge half volley into the back of the net from 6 yards out, and yes Sturridge looks up for it. 1.0 Wolves and this gave us more energy looking for another. We looked like scoring more and Barnsley looking like a team 2nd from bottom. On 14 Camara just missed out when he could have done better (does anyone remember his shot, last season against Birmingham which saw the ball almost hit the corner flag?). Barnsley's first venture into our box saw a corner given for Oakes taking the ball over the line, much to the annoyance of the Southbank. Blake and Sturridge looking like a pair did some neat play, although scoring opportunities were very few. Then out of nothing on 33 minutes a long hoof up field, saw Blake flick on for Sturridge to thump in his and Wolves second goal. YESSSS! More activity saw Camara thump the ball to the top of the Northbank. Then on 44 minutes and out of nothing a poorly cleared corner saw the wolves defence asleep and one of their lot tuck the ball into the back of the net. We then looked very uneasy - hurry up half time whistle.

Half time Wolves 2 Barnsley 1

Two subs for Wolves saw Pollet come on for Butler and Robinson for Connelly, but Barnsley started off the better and some worrying times for Wolves, with Pollet looking commanding in defence. On 60 Barnsley should have scored as we gave them a free header, then almost immediately we should have had another penalty as Blake was shoved off the ball. On 63 a scramble in the box saw a Blake shot just miss the target. The game looking better as Barnsley looked for the equaliser, more open play, until on 68 minutes a long accurate pass by Pollet picked out Newton who cleverly clipped the ball past the goalie into the net. With Wolves now looking comfortable, tremendous pace from Camara down the left, on 76 minutes, saw him pick out Sturridge for him to place home his 3rd and Wolves 4th - oh how so sweet.

Handbags from the Barnsley captain and Alex Rae (would you pick on Mr Rae - I think not!) saw him see red and with Barnsley down to 10 men there was no going back. Roussel came on for Blake on 80 minutes, but even though we were looking for more the game was already won and we are back on top. Oh how sweet life is at the moment; going to a game against the scum and top of the league, lets hope xmas cums early and we extend our lead with a win against the stripey lot.

Overall an excellent team performance, we looked a little nervy after their goal, but still held things together knowing that just keeping faith and it would be ours. A notable half game for Pollet and Camara beginning to impress, but obviously the merit to Sturridge - how long have we waited for a goal scorer - lovely!!

Keeping the Faith
