Just one of those Days?

Oh dear, back to our old ways again?

It was always going to be difficult keeping the unbeaten streak up, but why do we always find it difficult against (without being too detrimental) "inferior" teams? This was a game we needed to win, as the next few are going to be pretty difficult. Let's hope that this doesn't knock our confidence - after all we have seen this before haven't we?

As with any winning team, on a high, a good crowd (22,500) was in an expectant mood, ready for a big win; and thats how it seemed to start, the crowd willing the team on and Wolves having most of the early action. A 3rd minute thunderbolt from Muscat hitting the bar, then a Butler shot scrapping the post on 12. A fierce Newton shot saved well on 10, whilst in-between, Crewe showed us what to expect with two early chances one of which hit the post. However, Wolves were playing with confidence and an apparent expectation to score - and why not Wolves had scored in every game so far before this one. On 20 minutes, an impressive build up led to Lescott's shot being tipped around the post for a corner; from which a scramble in the box saw the ball hooked off the line (it was behind wasn't it, South Bank?). But it wasn't going all our way, on 30 a good move by Crewe, saw what seemed to be a good goal, ruled out for offside, and then on 40, only a fine Oakes save - parrying the ball onto the post and out for a corner, kept the teams level.

Half time 0.0

The second half started the better for Crewe, who sensed that our nerves were begining to show and went for the jugular, playing some neat footy. It paid off on 53 mins when a long ball over the top found Hulse who calmly lobbed Oakes to score - Hulse then got clattered (for having the indignity to score) by Butler and went in the book. The goal did little to spur us on and although we had enormous pressure, and what seemed like 10 minutes of injury time, we couldn't find that elusive opening. Even the replacement of Robinson with Rae, and Proudlock with Roussell did little.

The writing was on the wall, one more game to equal our record of 12 unbeaten, playing a team struggling near the relegation zone and our home record of 2 draws and 3 wins and only 8 goals for. Still at least the S***E can't take our unbeaten run away. Lets hope that this is the lesson needed, we had probably become too complacent, only a Dave Jones rollicking will sort us out for Saturday. This game proved that it isn't going to be an easy ride to the promised land, especially home games. However, if the team AND fans can keep our cool, there is absolutely no reason that this will not be "our" season.

Be calm!!!!!
