| Report by Blue and Yellow Purple Wolf
In my last report I went on about ex-players and how it was Millwall's ex-player, Alex Rae who had settled the match. This time it was business as usual as one of our ex-players scored against us. Norwich were unbeaten at home and we were unbeaten away - the oft-repeated cliche was that "something had to give". This was not strictly true as we could have drawn couldn't we? Right from the time Wolves kicked off it seemed pretty clear that a draw would be a major good result for us. We didn't look on form and Branches early 30 yard shot nearly reached the corner flag and summed up the rest of the match for Wolves in general as well as Branch in particular. On six minutes Norwich took the lead. McViegh, who looked bright all afternoon, went on a run past about three Wolves defenders and laid it off for someone to cross right across our penalty area to the other side where on of their players crossed it back and for a few agonising moments the ball seemed to stop on th line before Roberts - who else? - stabbed it into the back of the net. The ball should have been cleared a number of times before the goal. How embarrassing is it to have our shambles of a defence see the ball crossed from one side to the other and back again without getting an effective challenge in? Answer = very. We weren't really in the game, although Branch's miss of a brilliant Naylor cross showed quite clearly that we lack a forward with the "killer instinct". I think that we'll see some transfer activity before too long, but let's hope it's not Akinbyi. Norwich were looking very good and on about 30 minutes they got a second goal. A cheeky back heel sent one of their players through on the right and Naylor failed to stop a cross which found McVeigh who volleyed the ball brilliantly into the back of the net, giving Oakes no chance. Norwich were looking rampant and when a clearance from a corner found one of their players 30 yards out he shot and hit the underside of the bar. It wasn't looking good for us and we didn't seem to know what to do about it. Lescott went on a surging run forward, gave the ball away, had it given back to him and then succeeded in giving it away again. It wasn't our day and the bit of "afters" that Sinton had with one of their players seemed to sum up the frustration felt by many of us. The second half started as the first had finished with Libbra nearly scored with a superb shot. Lescott came closets to scoring for us when his shot was brilliantly saved by their goalie. Otherwise, despite plenty of Wolves possession and huffing and puffing, Norwich were still managing to carve us open almost at will. Robinson replaced Sinton and Roussel replaced the ineffective Branch, all to no avail. The best chance of the second half fell to Roberts when Oakes spilled an ineffectual cross straight to him - fortunately he shot well wide. Norwich certainly looked stronger than us. We looked disjointed and we were certainly missing Kennedy and a "goal poacher" striker. Still, its only one game and we now have a long break (over two weeks) for Kennedy to get fit and for Dave Jones to sign another striker. Still top of the league! Attendance: 20, 335
Goals: Norwich: Roberts (5 mins), McVeigh (33 mins) Notes: Despite their first away defeat of the season Wolves stay top of the league. Best Player : Newton (3 votes) Lescott (1 vote)
