Dave Jones - An era in figures

SUMMARYD Jones picture

Dave Jones will always be remembered by Wolves' fans as the manager who got us into the Premiership for the first time. But during Jones' stint as manager there were some incredibly depressing low points, most notably the nightmarish collapse towards the end of the 2001/02 season which saw West Brom promoted automatically, and Wolves lose in the play offs. The extreme inconsistency of Dave Jones Wolves will be one of the defining features of his reign, with a particular inability to make a good start to a season.

Critics will point to the amount of money he spent, but there's little doubt that Jones' Wolves - at times - played some of the most exciting football seen at Molineux in recent years. The wins against Newcastle in the cup and Sheffield United in the play off final were magnificent wins played with high-tempo fluid football. The problem was the lack of consistency and its ironic that Jones' last match in charge was a disappointing loss against Gillingham - a team that Wolves had beaten convincingly on a number of occasions during Jones' reign - most notable the 6-0 thrashing at Molineux in Wolves' promotion year.

Dave Jones was in charge of Wolves for just under two months short of 4 years. It's worth noting that for his first league match at Molineux (a 1-1 draw with Portsmouth) the attendance was 20,869. For his last home League match (a 2-1 win over QPR) attendance at an increased-capacity Molineux was 27,605.

FIRST AND LAST

Dave Jones' reign at Wolves started with a 1-0 FA Cup away win over Nottingham Forest on 7th January 2001 and ended with a 0-1 away league defeat at Gillingham on 30th October 2004.

Adam Proudlock scored the first Wolves goal for Jones, netting in the 1-0 win over Forest. Carl Cort scored the final goal for Jones' Wolves, scoring both goals in the 2-1 win over QPR at Molineux in Jones last home match.

Of the squad that Jones used in his first match, only two players (Oakes and Lescott) also played in his final match.

The starting line-up in his first match contained 5 'home-grown' players. The starting line up in his final match contained only two players who had come through the ranks. However, Proudlock and Robinson were the only 'young guns' who started in Jones' first match but were no longer with the club. Naylor and Andrews still featured in Jones' games towards the end of his Molineux career and the young defender Lowe was also in his final match.
