Norwich 3 Wolves 1 28/04/2002 |

| Report by Fat Stat Is there anything that is more of a cruel and unusual punishment than being a Wolves fan? I am going to save my true comments until next week, because I fully understand that it benefits no one but our enemies to be negative at a time like this. As someone who has a degree in psychology though, I will say one thing. GET A BLOODY SPORTS PSYCHOLOGIST IN DAVE, BECAUSE THIS TEAM DO NOT BELIEVE IN THEMSELVES. How different it all was at the beginning. It was scrappy, but Norwich didn't seem to have a clue about the final ball. There build up play was slow and we seemed able to cope with whatever they threw at us. Early on Oakes slipped when coming out for a back pass, but mostly we were un-troubled. We werecaughtt ball-watching from a free-kick, but Oakes was equal to the shot. Besides that Clint Easton (the name is no joke) was making my day by putting in crap crosses, corners and free kicks. All in all Wolves seemed up for it, although both Newton and Cameron gave me near-heart attacks by giving the ball away on the edge of our area. Then, on a bout twenty minutes and excellent bit of committed play by Cooper sent a cross in to Newton who headed back across goal. The ball bounced high and just eluded Blake who tried an overhead kick - but it fell to Sturridge who took it through a crowd of players and and found the back of the net, to make it 1-0. Camara was robbed which presented one of their players with a golden opportunity which they spurned. One of their corners then fell into the six yard area, but luckily Oakes smothered it. We were under almost constant pressure, but seemed able to cope. There were chances at the other end, particularly when Blake latched on to a defensive mistake, but his shot was easily blocked. Half time 1-0 Early in the second half we were playing well and snuffing out all their attacks. In fact we looked dangerous on the break, once when Newton steamed through, and played a ball to Blake whose through ball was taken of Sturridges' toe. From the resulting corner Cameron had a free header but he fluffed it wide. The Rae nearly set Cameron free, but it got caught under his feet. Then came the turning point in the match. A corner for Norwich was easily cleared, but it was looped back in routinely and the Wolves defense went walkabout as it was headed down and a hopeful shot squeezed past Oakes and into the net. This woke the yokels up. The game got very scrappy, which seemed to suit Norwich, even though they play the passing game. The commitment which had been evident earlier, especially in Newton and Blake just seemed to ebb away. Halle was beaten and then a looping cross and a glancing header gave Oakes no chance. 1-2. Miller came on for Newton, but to be absolutely honest he looks about 10% of the player we brought and we'd be lucky to get back 10% of the 3 million we spent on him. Then a free kick was awarded against Camera for God knows what, an easy ball was floated into our box, the defence went missing and an easy header saw Norwich get a fourth goal. It was the 94th minute and it has probably seen off the tie. Game over, more or less. We offered nothing in the second half, and I would let you know exactly what I think of this team, if it wasn't for the fact that I think we have to give 200% in the second leg to make this tie at least respectable. What the F*** is going on? |
