Report by JD Wolf

Last home game of the season (?), and a nice sized crowd even though the Wombles could only muster 600 together and embarrassingly they were mustered in one third of the lower John Ireland. No ground and no fans! (See Dons Fans views of this report for an alternative view).

Yesterdays stripey result put a bit of a dampener on the crowd, a last minute disputed penalty win meant yet another must win game against a team with play off ambitions. For April it was a bitterly cold day, and it took Wolves too long to warm up. The usual huddle incited the crowd, but the atmosphere was still a little subdued. This was a very scrappy game as nerves played a big part, but for all of Wolves' faults, the Wombles who were still looking for a play off place were pretty dismal. The first 20 mins were pretty even, although I felt that really only Lescott looked like he wanted to win the game and he had a particularly good first half, having the measure of ex-Wolves man David Connerly and an impressive looking Womble with an un-pronounceable (and unspellable ) name!

In fact it was David Connerly who almost had the first laugh, as Mr un-pronounceable's good run was put beyond Oakes only for it to be ruled off for handball. Butler almost gave a penalty away a little later as he blatantly pulled Connerly back, but the 20 stone 70 year old ref was having a blinder.

On 23 mins the goal that was to be the decider was scored, another run in from super Mo! with Sturridge seemingly off side forced a corner. The resulting inswinger saw Blake twist his head in true Exorcist style, without jumping to head the ball home. Oh yes how that was needed not only for Blake but also Wolves' first home goal in almost 350 mins. And direct from a corner as well - how honoured I am to witness such an event.

The goal upped the tempo and another surging run saw a super Mo vicious cross cum shot deflected just over the bar with the keeper well beaten. Miller replaced the injured Blake but he is just not the person we saw at the beginning of the season. Half time 1.0

Wolves started well and for the first 20 mins we came on a storm. super Mo's runs and Rae and Cameron making their mark in the midfield upped the expectancy. But we seem to be missing something up front with no real attacking decisiveness. "Ludo's" replacement of the injured Butler was very effective (especially his black headband - I first thought it was a new haircut, I must change my lenses!).

On 75 mins Oakes pulled off a tremendous save from a good Womble move and header. With no other real chances for either side the game came to a nervous conclusion, half way through the game the noise picked up in the ground as the crowd "sang their hearts out for the Boys" with a reverberating "Barmy Army" and there's only one Akinbyee. This helped the scrappy performance and got the team through a difficult few minutes.

So it all goes down to the last day - a scenario I wasn't expecting or even wanted to envisage. After the way we dominated the league in February its understandable that Sir Jack and all fans are a little annoyed. We only have ourselves to blame as our fate is in the lap of the gods and Ade's shooting boots. It will be tough against Sheffield Wednesday, but believe that we will win, lets hope that Trevor Francis can have the last laugh; or its the lottery of the play offs!
